Task: Read this story and then write four linked case studies, exploring the choices faced by each of  the participants. Discuss how their actions illustrate different perspectives on ethics. You must use  theories discussed in the first eight chapters of the textbook by Hinman (2013). Draw conclusions about whether the case studies that you developed support the statement in the assignment title. 

The story:  

1) Michael did not understand the assignment question in one of his units. He would not ask  for help from the lecturer or the learning advisor because he felt this would show weakness.

2) Michael was concerned that if he failed the unit he would fail his degree. He believed he  should do whatever was necessary to pass the unit, so he could get a good job.

3) After some discussion Maria, Michael’s girlfriend, agreed to help him. Maria did this  because she wanted to help Michael to get a good job. 

4) In the end Maria completed the whole assignment for Michael. Maria had often helped  Michael with his work.  

5) Michael did not change Maria’s draft of his assignment. Michael submitted the assignment as his own, and signed the plagiarism declaration. Michael had submitted other work that  Maria had completed. 

6) Shortly after this, Michael ended the relationship with Maria. Maria was devastated as she  was devoted to Michael and would do anything for him. 

7) One evening, Maria confided in her friend Julia, who was in the same class as Michael, that  she still missed and loved Michael. Maria also told Julia she had written many of Michael’s assignments, and had helped him throughout the course. Maria wondered how Michael was  managing without her help. 

8) Michael got a good mark for the assignment that Maria had written, whereas Julia got a  much lower mark. 

9) When Julia found out about this, she felt this was unfair. Julia wondered whether she ought  to tell her lecturer, but she did not want to get Maria into trouble, as Maria was her friend.

10) Instead Julia confided in Madeleine, who was a friend of her mother. After Julia had  confided in Madeleine, Julia asked Madeleine not to tell anyone else ever. Madeleine agreed because she didn’t know any of the people involved. 

11) Michael got a good job in one of the social professions when he graduated.  12) Omar, the CEO who was on the appointment panel told Michael the appointment panel had  been especially impressed by Michael’s strong academic record. Omar was surprised that  initially Michael seemed a bit embarrassed, but Michael soon regained his composure and  told Omar that he had always been academically gifted at school and university.

13) Julia had applied for the same job as Michael, but was unsuccessful. She was bitterly  disappointed but not surprised as she had never been a very confident person.

14) Madeleine was appointed as Michael’s manager and soon realised that Michael was the  person Julia had discussed with her.  

15) One day, Michael was boasting about his academic achievements. Madeleine wondered whether she ought to tell her manager, Omar, what she knew, or maybe even let the  university know.
