ABSTRACT
The purpose of this paper is to review the types of corrosion, reason for it and its effects on the marine vessels. Additionally the paper will also discuss the control measure that are being used to avoid corrosion on marine vessels, which helps in adding years to the life of the vessel and also avoid major accidents which may be due to corrosion of different parts and machineries of the vessel.

INTRODUCTION
There are number of material available for selection for constructing various system but selecting a proper material for a specific task is work of a design engineer. In ship industry, selection of metals for ship building and various systems is largely on the basis of the physical and mechanical property but selection of material on the basis of its interaction with environment can’t be ignored. Various metals reacts with their environment according to their chemical composition. Due to the interaction of metal with the environment, most of the metals are affected by corrosion while only some of the metals are able to withstand the corrosion. As marine vessels are majorly in seawaters, corrosion in seawater environment would only be discussed in this paper. Corrosion is natural process in which a substance (mainly metals) gets degraded. Technically, corrosion is a electrochemical process where a metal gets converted into more stable form like oxides and hydroxide. When a exposed metal surface comes in contact with acidic substance, including water, a chemical reaction starts and results in corrosion. Rusting of iron is best example of corrosion.
Marine vessel are continuously subjected to seawater, which have high concentration of salts and is very corrosive in nature to the vessel body and vessel systems. The classification of corrosion can be a broad topic and beyond the scope of this paper, but generally all types of corrosion that are know to human have potential to occur on a marine vessels. Some of the types of the corrosion that occurs on a vessel are : uniform corrosion, galvanic corrosion, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion and biocorrosion. These types of the corrosion would be discussed later in the paper.

Questions :
1. Which parts of the vessel are most likely to be affected by corrosion and why ?
2. What may be reason for corrosion on vessels even after using different techniques to avoid corrosion on vessels?
