As product development manager for NRI Foods Ltd you have been asked to develop a brand for a range of new products for one of a pre-specified group of consumers below:
Healthy dinner-time meal solutions for early (70+) or late (80+) seniors living alone;
E-commerce nutritious frozen vegan meals;
Premium quality chilled pasta meal for home delivery which can be microwave reheated in re-usable packaging that can also serve as plates – targeting urban millennials;
A selection of frozen meals for one targeted at new University students living away from home for the first time.
You will discuss the products that you identify with Linda Nicolaides so that we can reduce duplication of work on similar products.
Prepare a portfolio demonstrating the steps that you have followed to develop the PRODUCT BRAND, ensuring it is different from any of the brands that are currently on the market. You need to create a unique brand for your new product, as well as identifying the packaging and prepare a label that will conform to UK labelling legislation. The brand and packaging should to be fit for purpose and meet the requirements for the consumer group that you have chosen.
it is recommended that you should visit food shops, delicatessens, supermarkets, local markets and health food shops to review product brands prepared by your competitors for the same consumer group. You will need to undertake a critical review of the competitors’ products which should be supported by photographic evidence. Compare the types of packaging used in terms of sustainability, recyclability and environmental friendliness.
To support your investigation you will need to prepare a diary/portfolio that will illustrate the steps you have followed during your research. A process flow diagram will help you to focus on the different stages that you have followed which will help you to structure the portfolio.
An example of the project stages might be:
Generate an idea for a new food product for the consumer group and develop a brand for this product;
Demonstrate your understanding of competitors’ product brands prepared for the same consumer group;
Design a packaging/brand for your product;
Critically discuss the packaging in terms of sustainability and environmental friendliness and design the label so that it complies with legislative requirements;
Ensure that the product brand will contribute towards the health and wellbeing of the consumer group you have chosen and that the packaging will maintain the integrity of a safe and wholesome product.
