Mary Caroline Tillman, partner and leader of Egon Zehnder's (EZ's) global Financial Services Practice, stared at the Candidate Assessment summary (see Exhibit 1) one last time before she called it a night (see Exhibit 2 for Tillman's bio). The next day she would debrief the succession planning work that EZ had been completing for Dunnock Bank, a U.K.-based global financial services firm. Although the majority of the work supported the board's intuition on the executive landscape, she knew that the information on Andrew Jennings and Catherine Schuyler would likely prove contentious; however, she believed they both had strong potential. The Dunnock board sought to identify three candidates for CEO succession, which would probably occur in the next three to five years. The first two candidates would likely be the current worldwide heads of the retail and investment banking businesses for the firm. Jennings was widely viewed as the third candidate, given his experience running the firm's smallest division, commercial banking. However, EZ's work suggested that Schuyler merited similar consideration. Schuyler had been serving as a leader of smaller businesses for Dunnock in emerging markets. Tillman knew she would be asked for her thoughts, so she sought to marshal her talking points before the meeting.
