Consider the data in “Cardio.txt” on the LMS. This data set was obtained by researchers interested in studying the relationships among cardiovascular risk factors in males with sedentary occupations. They measured oxygen consumption (consider this to be the dependent variable, y), systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides in each of their study participants. Carry out an appropriate statistical analysis and report your results and conclusions.

2. (15 marks)
Consider the dataset “contraceptive.txt”, which contains information on more than 1600 married, fecund women in Fiji. Carry out an appropriate analysis to examine and interpret the impact of the age of the women, their education level and their desire for more children on whether or not they are using contraceptives. Write a short report of your findings, including all methods and assumptions used.

3. (15 marks)
Consider the data in “Halibut.txt”. Here we have survival data for 294 Atlantic Halibut caught using either longline or otter trawl gear. The data were collected in order to assess the effectiveness of a proposed minimum size limit in Canadian waters. Factors that might potentially influence halibut survival were also recorded: handtime handling time, logcat total catch (log-transformed), length length of fish (cm), deldepth difference between max and min tow depth (m) and towd the duration of the time the trawl net was towed on the bottom (mins).

(a) Are there any differences in the survival times for the two different trawl durations? Plot the data, and carry out an appropriate test for equality of the two survival curves.

(b) Now consider only the data for fish caught in the longer trawl durations (100mins, reflecting commercial fishing practices). Which variables are associated with survival? Analyse the data and write a summary of your findings.
