For the third part of the drug brochure assessment task, you need to research the toxicology of your allocated drug, with a particular focus on its adverse drug reactions (ADR) and interactions with other drugs and chemicals. Remember that toxicology is essential for ensuring the safe use of drugs and medications by focusing on a drug’s potential to cause toxic effects on the body. So toxicology is primarily concerned with understanding both the mode of action (what it does) and the mechanism of action (how it acts) for toxicity, as well as the susceptible target organ(s) and populations, and the potential for toxic interactions with other drugs and chemicals.

This section of your drug brochure should contain the following information (you should also include a visual component that quickly and clearly communicates one or more of the aspects listed):

• A description of your drug’s ADR mode(s) and mechanism(s) of action. This can include information about the most common ADR types, dose-limiting ADRs, ADR classification(s), target organ(s), toxic dose, etc.
• A description of your drug’s toxic interactions with other drugs. This should identify the mechanism (pharmacodynamic and/or pharmacokinetic) involved in each toxic drug interaction, shown in order of decreasing severity.
• A description of the drug’s most pertinent real-world applications for populations susceptible to ADRs. This should identify the most susceptible populations (e.g. relating to genetic, age, biological sex, disease factors) which experience ADRs for your drug and explain the mechanism(s) responsible.
• A description of the drug’s most pertinent real-world applications relating to toxic interactions with other agents, e.g. herbal medicines, food, lifestyle (smoking, drinking, recreational drugs, etc.) and chemical exposures. You should limit your description to a few of the most important of these toxic interactions, shown in order of decreasing severity, and identify the most likely mechanism (pharmacodynamic and/or pharmacokinetic) involved in each situation.

Research the toxicology of your drug using authoritative sources. Examples of authoritative sources include:

• Peer-reviewed articles published in scientific journals. You can search for peer-reviewed biomedical science articles via PubMed.
• Books or websites produced by peer-reviewed panels of experts in the field (e.g. Australian Medicines Handbook, MIMS, Therapeutic Guidelines).
• Textbooks authored by experts in the field (e.g. Rang & Dale’s Pharmacology, Goodman & Gilman’s Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics).
