Report Writing Assessment Answer

Assignment Task: Project: World Wide Fund for Nature (Germany)  Organisation Context  The world’s leading conservation organization, World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) works in 100 countries and is supported by more than one million members in the United States and close to five million globally. WWF's unique way of working combines global reach with a foundation in science, involves action at every level from local to global, and ensures the delivery of innovative solutions that meet the needs of both people and nature.  This work ties to WWF-Germany (HQ in Berlin), and in particular to WWF’s global Water Stewardship hub and Water Risk Filter team. As part of the Freshwater Practice, the Water Stewardship hub provides global support to teams working to engage and mobilize corporate actors to advance freshwater conservation. The Water Risk Filter is a flagship tool that has existed since 2012 and underwent a major update and re-launch in 2018.  Service Context  From its inception until 2017, the Water Risk Filter (WRF), which is a freely available online water risk assessment tool, was sponsored by DEG, part of KfW, the German investment bank. The primary users of the tool are:
  • WWF Offices to conduct water risk assessments for their corporate partners.
  • Companies to conduct their water risk assessments.
  • Consultancies to conduct water risk assessments for their corporate clients.
  • A small number of financial institutions (development banks and local banks).
Since 2017, the tool has needed to be self-sufficient and develop a new revenue/business model to ensure financial sustainability. It has derived revenue primarily from supporting WWF offices in water risk assessment work for corporate partners and to a less extent through specific research projects supporting the WWF network. However, key WWF offices, as well as a growing number of interested consultancies, use the tool directly for risk assessments with their corporate partners without providing any financial contribution.  There are also possibilities for indirect (passive) revenue that have not been fully exploited to date. Moreover, there are restricted sections of the tool as well as future developments of the tool that different users may be willing to pay for access.  The issue to explore is to review the current business model and assess opportunities for new/alternative revenue streams in the face of the constraints facing the project (e.g., charity, WWF network structure, similar tools, data license agreements etc.). Tied to that, positioning and marketing (target segmentation) are linked issues that arise from the project.  We are hoping to tweak and improve the WWF's business model to create stronger, longer-term financials for the tool.
