This module is designed to enable students to understand the process of planning, conducting and evaluating research in events and allied sectors.

Module Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:

  • Analyse the major debates and perspectives taken in management research and event evaluation to critically assess the related range of conceptual or theoretical frameworks and research methods;
  • Conceive and define research problems and select appropriate research methods and techniques for research projects and the evaluation of events. 
  • Formulate a plan to gather, collate, analyse, interpret, present and evaluate appropriate data to meet research objectives;
  • Explain and account for cultural and ethical issues in research, and recognise the existence of and potential for bias in different research techniques.

 

Module Learning Activities
This module will offer formative and summative learning opportunities. Learning will take place through a combination of lectures, workshops and group activities. Each week you will undertake a 3-hour lecture/workshop. Lectures/workshops are essential for imparting key information. To ensure student engagement, lectures will involve a number of in-class discussions and debates. Seminars will be used to consolidate learning; whilst group work will contextualise learning in the form of formative and summative assessment.

Assessment Details

Assessment 1 – Discursive Paper
Read the two articles provided by your tutor and available via MyBeckett. Compare and contrast the articles and discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the views, perspectives and/or theories discussed. Provide evidence to support your views through wider reading and referencing. 

Assessment 2a - Research proposal oral presentation

• Prepare a 10-minute presentation using visual aids as appropriate.
• The aim of the presentation is to explain and justify your proposed research to the student group.
• Tutors and fellow students will ask questions and make suggestions.
• You will be allocated a time slot to present in during week 11.
• Marks are allocated for the content of the presentation and your presentation skills.
• You will be given immediate feedback which can be used to improve your written proposal.

Assessment 2b - Written research proposal

Prepare a proposal for the research you plan to undertake for your dissertation/research project. 
This should be in report format and cover the following areas:

• Introduction, background and context of your proposed research with a justification for choosing this topic;
• Literature review;
• Methodological process and methods;
• Ethical issues and anticipated limitations.
