Highlights
Overview
Using a range of data analysis (such as descriptive statistics, data manipulation and plotting techniques in R) you will work on a supplied data set generated from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). You will conduct a statistical investigation and answer a series of business-relevant questions. To succeed in this assessment you will need to accurately interpret and communicate the results of your analysis.
Assessment criteria
This assessment will measure your ability to:
• Manipulate and slice the data appropriately for the problem, using the R package dplyr (5%)
• Perform descriptive analysis, using R to calculate accurate summary statistics (10%)
• Create visualisations of key results, plotting distributions and cumulative distributions using ggplot (10%)
• Interpret and communicate the results of statistical investigation accurately (5%)
learning outcomes
This assessment is relevant to the following course learning outcomes:
• CLO 1Plan a statistical data investigation by selecting the appropriate approach for solving the problem, considering a range of analytical approaches including the issues and pitfalls in applying these techniques and biases introduced through data collection.
• CLO2 Use relevant open source environments and tools (e.g. R) to perform fundamental statistical analyses (descriptive analysis, hypothesis testing, ANOVA, correlation and linear regression) and support communication and visualisation of key results.
• CLO3 Communicate results accurately and in a way to prevent or minimise potential bias, errors in sampling data.
Assessment Details
Prior to starting this assessment:
• Visit the getting started guide and install R and R studio
• Install the following packages for R: ggplot2 and dplyr
• Download the supplied data set using the link provided on the Assessment 1 page.
• Load the data into a data frame in R
• The data set is based on the population demographic data of different regions in Australia broken down by gender and age sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2016 Census.
