Highlights
Eva Cassidy, Danny Stewart and Jessica Chan Case Study:
Eva Cassidy, Danny Stewart and Jessica Chan have recently graduated from Deakin University with varying post-graduate degrees (in the areas of Commerce/Finance, Management and Marketing/Information Systems respectively). They all undertook MIS798 together (Project Management) and had a positive experience working together on a team. They are now good friends and all have strong entrepreneurial interests in starting up a new business venture together in the area of project management.
All three are also avid skiers and snowboarders. Eva recently returned from a year-long internship and skiing holiday in Europe. During this time, she went to a few snow resorts, including the famous Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (referred to as Chamonix) resort area near the junction of France, Switzerland and Italy (and had an amazing time...). Meanwhile, Danny and Jessica enjoyed a bumper snow season here in Victoria and a couple of long weekends away with their respective families at Mt Buller and Falls Creek, as per their busy work schedule allowed.
One day, the three friends met at a nearby café. While enjoying Melbourne's amazing coffee scene, they talked about their skiing holidays and their plans for the future. In the last year, Jessica has started her own small project management consultancy firm and has recently been awarded the contract to project manage and plan the implementation and rollout of a multi-purpose “cashless” Mawson Pass electronic debit card for Mount Mawson snowfield in Tasmania. The use of a cashless Mawson Pass card will enable customers to access chair lifts via electronic readers and also to use the Mawson Pass card as a debit card to pay for all mountain-based activities, services, including food and drink. This approach means that customers can preload their card and/or book and pay online for all services and activities, like lesson packages etc. and therefore do not need to carry any cash while on the mountain. Jessica needs Eva and Danny to assist her with the execution of this project.
Mount Mawson in Tasmania was a club ski field run by volunteers within the Mount Field National Park in southern Tasmania about 89 kilometres by road north-west of the state capital Hobart. The mountain has an elevation of 1318m and consists of five rope-tows to enable skiers and snowboarders to access the upper slopes and ski runs from the base building (Chalet) adjacent to the carpark.
Now a NZ tourism business consortium (Unreal Travels) has obtained an initial 10-year lease, with an option for further 10 years on the snowfield from the State Government and have been investing in new infrastructure, such as installing new chair lifts and making structural improvements to the existing ski runs and especially expanding the base building facilities in the old Chalet. This is a significant investment in the local area recreation opportunities and will draw increasing numbers of local, interstate and international visitors onto the mountain, surrounding districts and towns as the snowfield are developed and expanded.
While Unreal Journeys is happy to provide most of the funding for this project, they are confident of receiving some grant money from the State Government to off-set some of the initial setup costs, like the new electronic cashless card system. However, beyond the first 5 years of operation, the snowfield is expected and must generate enough money to cover its costs and return a small profit.
Furthermore, the intention of Unreal Travels is to also take advantage of the local and statewide mountain biking community and utilize the mountain’s infrastructure to attract mountain bikers during the warmer times of the year when there is no snow for a start. Although, there may be other recreation opportunities for other activities that may draw patronage to the mountain and the Chalet facilities.
Jessica will act as the main Project Manager for the Mawson Pass Project. Eva and Danny will take on supporting roles on the team. Danny, with his strong commerce and finance background, would like to concentrate on the financial aspects of the project, whereas Eva would like to oversee marketing, promotion and the development of a music festival website.
Your team's job is to put together a project plan for the new Mawson Pass Project.
