Demographic Data :

Mayte is a 28 year old Latina female who works as a paraprofessional in an elementary school. She graduated from high school and went to community college and obtained her associate' s, however she decided against going on to pursue a bachelor's degree due to her mother becoming terminally ill. Her father manages a small grocery store and her mother was a teacher before she had to stop working. Mayte is the oldest of three siblings, and while she is very close with her family members, she feels an overwhelming sense of responsibility to take care of them. Both of her siblings obtained their bachelor's degree. She has been very consumed With her work and family, she rarely has time for social activities other than attending some church events. She does wish she would be more social and would like to have the time to date. May-te lives with her parents and siblings, but yearns to have a family of her own.

Background Information: Mayte went to therapy because she started having panic attacks stemming from anxiety over her work performance. She notes that the school system began implementing assessments that could place her job in jeopardy since she IS "not the best paraprofessional there." She admitted within the past few months she has been having difficulty sleeping, racing thoughts, and has been eating more. She expressed feeling "stuck" and feeling disappointed m herself. Mayte also shared she feels lonely and depressed, and stated that she thinks no one would miss her if she were to "disappear" but deemed Intent to harm herself or others. When she started counseling, she shared how her mother was a big inspiration to her and she wanted to be an educator just like her, however they were not very close. Mayte• s father was her biggest cheerleader while she was growing up, but this often lead to issues between her parents. Her mother felt that Mayte could have continued with obtaining her college education, despite her cancer diagnosis, and often verbalized her opinion that Mayte was a "failure" for staying there in the home and taking care of her instead of getting a "good job, having a family, and becoming financially stable." Mayte has no history of suicidal thoughts or history of self-harming behaviors.

Presenting Problem:

Mayte has returned to counseling because her mother is being placed in hospice care. Although May-te noted some symptom reduction with her previous counseling experience, she was unsure if counseling could help her at this point. Mayte has expressed that she is angry and frustrated, and notes some anxiety, sadness, and feelings of worthlessness. She is unsure of how she needs to proceed with her life since she has spent most of her adulthood taking care of her mother and now "there will be no need for me." She cannot decide if she should get her degree in education, choose a new career path, or focus on getting married as she would Ilke to have children. Mayte feels she is unable to manage her anxiety and has stated she does not want to acknowledge that she will lose her mother.
