A personal reflection on learnings from the capstone subject and consultancy research process.
• A personal reflection on skills developed over the MBA
Capstone this Is Example , You Have To Use Diferent Different Leadership Modelthen Knowing Doing Being
Theories, the application of these theories in understanding the sample problems, and the actual strategies used by the companies to address the problems were discussed in the lectures. This allowed us to view the macro and micro environment of businesses, ponder and make realisations, and share varying perspectives of applicable strategies to the topics that were being discussed.
Assessment 1 and 2 in the MBA600 Capstone: Strategy required the student to think and act as a consultant, study a real and existing company, apply the theories and strategies discussed in the lectures, then present the findings together with justified recommendations and a conclusion.
According to Dr Stefan Baldi, teaching sustainable goals instead of situation-related rules will encourage independent and out-of-the-box problem solving skills and by focusing on basic values and personal goals will develop competencies for students that would allow them to attain two goals for academic studies, one is for the student to have a smooth transition into the job market and the other is to enable the student to handle dynamic and complex situations.
Learning, understanding and utilising the four essential Capstone skills, namely Knowing, Doing, Being, and Reflective skills, equip the students as they transition towards the world outside school, empowering them in being confident with their planning/strategizing, leading, implementation and in the evaluation of results.
Knowing pertains to the theories that were taught and learned, as well as the strategies required to manage a company successfully. It is also being able to do what was promised, which further defines competency in an individual.
Doing is the practical application of an individual’s expertise towards real situations. It is the willingness to keep promises, showing the individual’s intentions and honesty.
Being is the personal values and goals, the individual’s continuous fulfilment of the expectations as a socially responsible leader with morals and values, thereby exhibiting professionalism.
Reflective skill or self-reflection is the ability to carefully evaluate results, learn and improve further.
Personal Reflection
The Kaplan Business School MBA600 Capstone subject is like a smorgasbord of everything we have learned, from Leadership, Ethics, Financial Interpretation and Communication, Marketing Psychology, to Comprehensive Healthcare Strategies all rolled into one.
In my own words, the Capstone course has reinforced in me the importance of leadership skills, research and thoroughness, continuous learning and improvement, receptivity to ideas and innovation, and developed my communication skills. It helped me understand marketing psychology and the cognitive dissonance experience better, view the macro and micro environment of a business using SWOT and PESTEL, analyse and apply the best suited strategy in directing a company towards profitability and sustainability. Integrating these skills that I have developed and learned with the essential Capstone skills, we have:
Knowing
My work experience from 1999 up to 2007 in the Philippines has been mostly sales, marketing, customer service, and store management. Working in Singapore from 2007-2013 has shown me that there were differences in both socio-political and work environment from that of my home country. My experiences allowed me to see different work practices, business models and how companies are started, ran, and for some, how they closed.
The Capstone course has taught me to be more thorough in acquiring information and research for factual and credible data, which is conveniently more accessible online than a decade ago. In our assessments, we have undergone interviews with key personnel from the company we have studied. The information we have compiled was then used to understand the environment of the company, and apply the theories that we have learned subsequently. The assessments we have completed aided us in developing our ability to transfer the learned theories into practice.
I have learned the value of seeking opportunities arising from competitive strategies and that in the midst of business operations, one should be mindful of innovation and continuous improvement. We also need to be aware of disruptive innovation in the market which may impact the business we are in.
A friend of mine started a solutions company in the Philippines aptly named Cushyfy, as a tool to make things easier. The company aims to provide technological solutions to their clients in the form of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software program. The program can be accessed through computers and handheld devices like tablets or phones, as long as there is an internet connection. This will allow managers or business owners to see sales, employee attendance, and inventory, among others, in real time. It was initially created to compete locally with SAP; however, it has evolved into something that can be customised specifically for the needs of each client. In one of our discussions, we spoke about how to make the program available for small businesses and the possibility of bringing this service to Australia. I was requested to conduct a study to gauge its’ feasibility and analyse the existing competitors. SWOT and PESTEL will be the method I will be applying to view the macro and micro environment of the company in an international setting. My experience on the use of AutumnCare, PeoplePoint and LeeCare in Australian aged care for patient recording may assist Cushyfy in developing their own patient record system.
Doing
I see critical thinking as a skill that gets better through experience. Capstone has helped in developing my skill in analysing a situation and in applying the best suited strategy, to deliver and achieve the goals of the company.
Initialising internationally an unknown company like Cushyfy is a huge leap and would require focus and a great deal of study. It already has a list of big and small clients in the Philippines; however, unveiling it in the Australian market meant a lot of planning with questions on security risks, and privacy as the operation is cloud-based. In this scenario, it is recommended to be thorough in ensuring the safety of data and start with small businesses first and then grow whilst building its reputation.
Being
We have learned about different styles of leadership as well as how a person with a high level of emotional intelligence is more effective. Effective leadership is a skill that can steer the company into achieving its’ objectives. I have always followed the “lead by example” way of leadership and because of learning the different styles, I have opted to choose Situational leadership as the best way in leading. According to an article in St. Thomas University Online, Situational leaders should possess the following characteristics: Insight, Flexibility, Trust, Problem Solving, and Coach. This means that as a leader, you would need to try understanding the needs of your people and adjust the management style accordingly, acquire their confidence and trust, solve problems, analyse the maturity and ability of your people to enable you to apply the right method and enrich their personal character. This will ensure that leadership responsibilities are fulfilled professionally, with morals and values in the core.
My verbal and written communication has improved with continuous interactions in class, at work, and with the assessments that we had completed. However, I would need more exposure to the art of public speaking or gain more experience in talking in front of a crowd to build up my confidence. The Irish playwright George Shaw once said “the single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place”. Miscommunication often result into misunderstanding and as such it affects how tasks are carried out and the ability to achieve objectives. This just shows that the importance of effective communication cannot be overlooked.
