1. (30 points) The current design on a rotating piece of agricultural equipment, shown at the right, utilizes tapered roller bearings; both radial and axial loads are shown. Maintaining the lubrication requirements is problematic; therefore, you are tasked with choosing ball bearings that will meet the requirements. The shaft rotates at 350 rpm with an expected life of 2500 hours and a system reliability of 90%. The system sees light to moderate impact. As designed, only one of the bearings will support the axial load; you need to determine which bearings supports the axial load based on the drawing. Bearing properties are shown in attached Table 1-1 for single-row angular contact and Table 1-2 for double-row angular.
a) Select the appropriately size single-row or double-row angular-contact bearings for the left-hand bearing which has both axial and radial forces. Hint: you will need to assume a reasonable Fa/C0 and possibly iterate. If you need to iterate then you must show at least 2 iterations for full credit.
b) Select the appropriately size single-row or double-row angular-contact bearings for the right-hand bearing which has only radial forces.
2. (20 points) A journal bearing utilizes an Oiles 80 (see Table 2-1) Oil- impregnated Polyacetal bushing which is 187.5 mm long with a 150 mm bore and operates in a dusty environment at 60°C. The allowable wear without loss of function is 0.10 mm.
The radial load is 25.0 kN and the journal rotates at 100 rpm.
a) Is this a good bearing design? Justify your answers quantitatively (multiple design parameters should be considered).
b) Regardless of your answer to Part a), estimate the number of revolutions for radial wear to be 0.10 mm. The motion-related wear factor in SI units is provided in Table 2-2.
c) How much heat is generated by friction in the bearing? (In Shigley’s heat transfer equation, J is simply a conversion factor for US units. For SI units J = 1.0 Newton ? meter/Joule.)
