Task: 1. Task 1 You have been given an engineering drawing as shown in Figure 1. You are asked to design modular fixture(s) using standard fixture elements (locators, clamps and supports etc.) to hold the components for machining operations. The geometry of the block aluminium before machining is 72mm×35mm×42mm. You are supposed to use a 3 axis CNC machining centre to machine the block to the final shape shown in the Engineering drawing in Figure 1. Using SolidWorks to create a CAD model of the final components based on the engineering drawing shown in Figure 1; 2. Decide the number of setup(s) and for each of the setup, identify the features to be machined, the stage geometry of the component after each of the setup (The number of set up indicates how many times the components have to be taken out and put back again on the machining centre to reposition the components for machining operations ) 3. Design a module fixture composed of locator and clamps for each of the setup. You are encouraged to reuse the fixture elements (locator and clamps) for different setups; 4. The locator and clamps should be mounted on the base plate (CL-MF40-0801) shown in Figure 2 which has already been chosen for you. When the components are located within the modular fixture, the components should have loading repeatability. Loading repeatability means the component is located, namely, when the component is taken off from the fixture and put back again within the fixture, it will stay at the same position. Manufacturing1 6. For the fixture design of each setup , provide: (a) Screenshots of the 3D assembly CAD models showing the top and front views of the fixture-component assembly. The positions of locator, clamps and other fixture elements (e.g. modular bases, washes, nuts etc) in relation to the component should be shown clearly; (b) Bill of Materials; 7. Try to use standard components as much as possible; Note: The standard components you may need include: dowel pins, side clamps, Top Clamp, Washer and Nut etc. 8. If you think it is better to make customised fixture elements rather than standard ones, provide your justification for this. 2.2 Discussion For the machining of the parts shown in Figure 1on a 3 axis machining centre, explain the consequences it will cause if the coolant is accidently switched off by an inexperienced operator.
