There is diversity between the various roles to be performed within the Automation / SCADA Engineering function:

a) Client Engineering Consultant

b) Automation Vendor Systems Engineer

c) Production Development Engineer

The exercises in assessments 2 to 4 reflect specifically on project roles which are (a) and (b) above.

Part 3: Implementation

In this fictitious project, you have changed hats. In Assessment 2 you were the client engineering consultant and now you are acting in the new role of the automation vendor’s system specialist. From the requirements set out in the FDS including the legacy P&IDs, produce a response to demonstrate the tenderer’s capability to provide the design and implementation service. It would be beneficial to look on the Rockwell vendor’s website at the product offerings including capabilities and benefits of the software, in particular the current drive towards the Industry 4.0, the IIOT and the integration of automation and business systems. The next steps require a demonstration of the tenderer’s proposal for design and implementation of the full automation upgrade meeting with the requirements set out in the FDS.

Step 1: The tenderer must propose a project team to perform the design and implementation. Master of Engineering (Industrial Automation) 4 A suggested response will be a simple organogram with a project manager, planner and key actors involved in the tasks.

Step 2: Discuss the proposed technical solution, typically measuring devices, controllers, logic, HMI, the screens, layering, alarm management, network, local operator interfaces, etc. in consideration of the functional requirements set out in your FDS. Rationalise your proposal giving reasons for your selection of hardware, software and data communications.

Step 3: List and describe at least five key vendor design deliverables (drawings, schedules, data sheets, etc.) that the tenderer proposes to be included within the package.

Step 4: Assessment 2 required you, in your role as the Client Engineering Consultant, to tabulate 10 technical attributes that will be used for bid evaluation. Now, in your new role as the automation vendor’s specialist, you are required to address each of these attributes with a technical solution.
