The heart is a multivalve organ that pumps blood throughout the body by a well-defined sequence of muscle contractions. These contractions are caused by excitable cells simultaneously depolarising which causes a significant voltage to be present around the heart. The polarisation and depolarisation of the heart can be detected on an ECG waveform. However, as the signal travels to the surface of our skin, it has attenuated significantly, but still has a distinct and recognisable signal. 
An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a graph (Figure 1) produced by an electrocardiograph that provides information about an individual's cardiac health. Doctors commonly use ECGs in clinical applications to diagnose cardiac diseases and monitor events such as tachycardia. 
To successfully acquire an ECG waveform, you must first amplify the signal. The signal that the electrodes can pick up is on the millivolt scale, and therefore needs to be amplified by a large factor for data analysis. The signal then needs to be filtered in a low pass or bandpass filter to ensure that noise is eliminated without removing any pertinent information from the waveform. The data should then be sent to software such as LabVIEW for further analysis. The connection between the measurement apparatus and the software installed on PC/laptop is a data acquisition system such as a myDAQ card. There are more digital filtering and amplifying options available in software for further analysis of the ECG signal.
