Highlights
OBJECTIVE
In this free-fall experiment the objective is to measure the acceleration due to gravity as accurately and precisely as you can. You will do some preliminary measurements to assess and improve your technique, before making measurements of the time to fall from rest through four measured distances. The distance traveled, d, is related to the elapsed time, t, by the equation d = ½ gt2
If a graph of d against t?2; is plotted, then the acceleration due to gravity, g, may be determined from the slope.
DESCRIPTION
MEASUREMENT OF “g” BY FREE FALL
This experiment uses the free app for iPhone and Android phones called phyphox. This app was created by the RWTH Aachen University to access all of the phone’s sensors and use them in physics experiments. In this experiment you will use the microphone to start and stop a timer (acoustic stopwatch function). A small object is balanced on the end of a ruler, which is placed a measured distance above a target. The ruler is struck horizontally, causing it to slide out from underneath the small object. The small object then falls from rest to the target below. The sound of the ruler being struck starts the timer and the sound of the object hitting the target stops the timer.
