Question 1 (125/200 marks)
Q1.1 (90 Marks). Using the stiffness method, determine the reactions at the supports, BM & SF diagrams and displacements of the steel beam shown in Figure 1. Show the stiffness matrices for each member, the fixed end moments/forces and the assembled global stiffness matrix. You may use any convenient method for manipulating matrices. E (Steel) is 200 GPa, Poisson’s ratio 0.3 and Beam section details can be found in One Steel product catalogue. (A copy of one steel catalogue has been posted on the study desk).

Q1.2 (35 Marks) Perform a FEA analysis using Creo6.0 simulate for the Steel beam as shown in Figure Q1. Provide the details of your FEA model with your answers. Use 2D FEA analysis (line elements). Sub-divide the beam appropriately to obtain uniform stress/strain and displacement outputs. Using FEA results,

1. Draw BM and SF diagram of the beam and compare with manually created BM & SF diagrams.
2. Determine the reactions at supports. Tabulate and Compare FEA and the manual calculations of reactions at the support
3. Plot a total bending stress of the beam along its axis
4. Verify Max FEA bending stress of the BEAM with an appropriate manual calculation. (Hint: Use Beam Bending Formula)

 

Question 2 (75/200 marks)
Figure Q2 shows an Aluminium alloy bracket use in an aircraft structure. Perform a FEA analysis using Creo Simulate 6. Guest Lecturer has provided solid and mid-surface models (attached with this assignment) and adhered to the design & FEA criteria explained by the lecturer.
