Question 1
Problem Statement

Q1.1
Using the stiffness method, determine the axial forces within members, reactions at the support and the displacements of joints of the truss shown in the Figure 1. The truss was built using 50 mm x 50 mm x 3 mm steel SHS with E= 200 GPa (approx). (Cross members BD and CE are not connected at the middle)
(a) Show local stiffness matrices for each member and the assembled global stiffness matrix. Show your step by step solution.
(b) Use an appropriate method to solve the matrix if necessary (e.g. inverse matrices). and tabulate the results. (Axial forces within members, the displacements of joints of the truss and reactions at the support)

Q1.2
(a) Perform an appropriate finite element analysis on Creo 6.0 Simulate using simple beam elements (lines) for the truss and show results i.e. plots of axial forces and displacements.
(b) Tabulate the results i.e. axial forces of the truss members, reactions at the supports, and the displacements at the joints and Compare your results Q1.1 with the FEA results.
