Highlights
"Conventional Air Conditioning System Heating load estimate for the three main floors of the UOW library building"
Major Task
This assignment is designed as if you are engineers in a Company of consultants commissioned by the University to design an air conditioning system to service the three floors of the University of Wollongong Library (ie imagine that this Building has yet to be built). The Carrier method from the available to you Draft design guide should be used to size the plant for heating purposes (the old Design guides can also be used as an alternative). Simplified plans for the library building are given in Moodle. You should use the simplified plans for this assignment. However, we are also giving you more detailed plans which you could use for reference purposes only and in most cases, they should not be necessary for this assignment. The group must be consistent as to matters such as design conditions used (explicitly reference the
design guide that you used for selecting design conditions), material properties of the structure, air change rates, etc. Some of these assumptions are given in this document. If information of this kind is definitely not available then reasonable assumptions may be made, providing they are noted and
justified in the report.
Task a) Heating Load. Perform a Carrier Method (Draft AIRAH guide) heating load estimate for the three floors of the University of Wollongong Library. You could include a hand calculation in the report if you prefer which you should also implement in Excel for completing Task b) below. A "Figure 2.2" from the Draft AIRAH design guide should be completed for each building floor and all relevant explicit calculations should be shown in your report or, if appropriate, in Appendix. Psychrometric charts should be completed and submitted. These psychrometric charts should be generated in Excel using the work you completed during the tutorials at the start of this subject.
Task b) Use the Excel spreadsheet file that you developed and make 8 changes of the design parameters that significantly affect the heating loads (e.g. use a different wall type) in order to quantify the impact these changes have on the previously calculated heating loads. Summarise and critically discuss the changes and the results in less than two pages in the report. Show also all 8 calculations in your spreadsheet.
Task c) Prepare a one page Summary of Sustainability Recommendations for the specific library building that you would make as a building services engineer for the minimization of greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. Try to be as specific to this building as possible for most of your recommendations. Make a critique of the building as it is presently designed (i.e. provide positive and negative commentary on features of the building and suggest ways in which it could be
improved). Incorporate all aspects of energy and other potential impacts. There should be three persons in each group and you are encouraged to have each student performing a heating load analysis on a given floor. The group will then collectively sum the loads involved (i.e. you are making design calculations for central air handling and refrigeration plant).
Report format
The maximum length of the text in the report is to be 5-6 (five to six) sides of A4 in addition to any diagrams/charts/figures which, if appropriate, may also be included as appendices. Use any graphical information you think is appropriate and that improves your Company's chances of winning the contract. You must include samples of all-important calculations so that the examiner of your report can easily determine how quantitative figures have been derived (e.g. U-values, ventilation values, etc) and reference the Draft AIRAH guide or other texts as appropriate.
DETAILS OF CONSTRUCTION TO BE ASSUMED
Glass: Glazing is taken as Double clear 6mm thick per pane and with a 5mm air gap in the middle. Window dimensions should be determined from drawings or approximated by site visits. In any case, you should reference the source of your assumptions.
Roof assume metal deck, 50mm insulation, all ceilings suspended fiberglass ceiling tiles. Floor-to-ceiling height to be determined either from drawings or approximated by site visits. In any case, you should reference the source of your assumptions. Ceiling-to-roof height = 500mm.
All external non-glazed walls: double brick (110mm) with a 50mm air gap with 15mm gypsum plaster lining.
If other information is required either make a reasonable assumption (and justify in report) and/or discuss in class.
