Andrew, a mechanic by trade, is excited about the purchase of his first household computer. He has
been advised by his bank that he can check his account through the internet and he wishes to make
use of this convenient service. He has also heard at his local pub that he can download whatever he
likes on his computer, including movies and music. His local technician sets up everything for him for
a fee of $200 and asks if Andrew is interested in any anti-virus software. “What’s that?” Andrew
inquires. “It will protect your computer from hackers and things like that” the technician replies.
“Ohhh ok, how much do those things go for?” Andrew asks. “The cheapest software package is $350,
but I can install one for you for $300 since you’ve purchased the entire computer package with us.”
“$300!? For some magic on the screen? No thanks mate, I deal with machines all day, what’s the
worst they can do?” The technician chuckles, wishes Andrew all the best with his new system, and
leaves.
Andrew uses his web browser to type in the title of the latest blockbuster hit, ‘Creations’. A whole
list of websites appears on his screen and he clicks one that says ‘FREE DOWNLOAD NOW!’ The
screen flashes and blinks, the computer starts processing information for a few minutes before the
website closes itself. Disappointed and slightly concerned about what just occurred, Andrew checks
his bank details and then logs off and goes to bed.
The next day when he logs onto his computer, advertisements pop up all over the screen, there are
messages from various sources and programs appear that were not installed the day before. Andrew
calls the technician, who says he will come around when he gets the chance. Andrew goes to work
and checks his bank account during his lunch break. He notices that $5,000 is missing. He calls the
bank to inform it of the theft and is told that two transactions have gone through from Mexica with
Andrew’s bank details. The bank will do what it can to freeze the funds, however, there is no
guarantee Andrew will get his money back.
Distraught, Andrew calls you for advice as to how he can get his money back. The attack on his
personal computer has left him feeling violated and he wishes to commence proceedings against the
parties responsible.
Note - Advise Andrew.
