Assessment task: Media Power Project
Task: Students will design, research, conduct and report original investigations of some aspect of media, making use of a minimum of one key theory or concept from the MediaPower required reading list and at least two real-world examples of media research. Each student will submit their research in audio-visual, research poster, or classic written research or industry report genres with a view to improving their readiness for honours or industry research tasks. Students demonstrate their ethical approach by including a 200-word statement on how their research design takes ethics, diversity, and Indigenous issues into consideration.
Further information: In this assessment students are expected to grasp a key media studies concept from a required reading and apply the concept as a tool for analysing the media power in specific types of media. Students are advised to embed a Media Power 54080 concept at the heart of their assignment to demonstrate their depth of engagement. Any assignments which includes an audio-visual presentation or a research poster should include an explanation of the key concept(s) selected from the MediaPower required reading list as well as an ethical statement. All audio visual and poster assignments must be accompanied by an annotated bibliography (1,000 words) of at least five scholarly research publications (peer reviewed journal articles) outlining the relevance and application of that literature to your research. Conventional research reports for A3 must also make use of at least five relevant studies and a 54080 required reading. Students planning audio-visual A3s are expected to draw on expertise developed in previous subjects for the practical requirements of their chosen medium and are advised not to use this assessment to try to master a new medium for the first time. If you are doing an audio or visual assessment, please post your file to YouTube or Vimeo and include a URL at the top of your annotated bibliography (plus a cover sheet) which you upload to Turnitin. Please use UTS Harvard referencing style for the written contribution and include a list of references (bibliography not included in word count) and make sure you have a look at the assessment guides and marking rubrics up at Canvas 54080.
