  • Local/national and international issues and perspectives in ECEC.

The Media's Role in ECEC

What do you read about or hear about in the media about early childhood education and care? What issues are reported regarding children? Missing children? Child abuse? Refugees? Immunisation? Cost of childcare? Children who are vulnerable/disadvantaged? Bullying? The impact of COVID-19 on the early chilhdood workforce? What else? Key questions for us to consider are:

  • What does the media report regarding children and ECEC?
  • How does the media information influence society's perception of child care? About children? Of families? Of teachers?

Below are two extracts from Early Childhood Australia's Webwatch broadcast about early childhood in the Australian news. Review what was covered in August 2023 (link to the full webwatch is available here):

Reflect and consider:

  • What does this tell you about the role of media in ECEC?
  • How are children portrayed in main-stream media in Australia?
  • Do you believe that the views of the Australian (and broader) public are influenced by the news media that relates to ECEC and/or to children?
  • What can be done to address how children and ECEC are discussed and viewed within main-stream media?
