Highlights
Intent: This task involves an individual report that can be linked to the topic of the group presentation. Students will individually develop a grant proposal for a biomedical engineering idea that addresses a medical problem. This task is a written report that encompasses the following aspects: background and aims, review of literature, project innovation, project design, and project outcomes and benefits. The report needs to be referenced using a scientific referencing system. This task trains students on scientific writing, critical analysis of information, and ability to generate a research proposal.
Task: A grant proposal is what researchers write to funding bodies, to ask for funding to perform an innovative research project. The grant proposal must therefore clearly justify what problem is being solved, what is the latest research in the area, what is the proposed solution and why it is innovative, what are the experimental approaches used for conducting the research, and what are the outcomes and benefits of the research. Students will individually select a topic for the grant proposal. The grant proposal must include the following sections:
Background and aims – introduce chosen topic; identify a medical problem that can potentially be addressed through biomedical engineering; outline drawbacks of current treatments and gaps in research; briefly outline proposed solution.Review of literature – common strategies and latest research developments in biomedical engineering relating to chosen topic; describe any products which have already faced the market.Significance and innovation – describe your solution – what does it include and what is the rationale for each aspect of the solution; why is it innovative; how does it address current challenges in the field.Project design – outline the experimental approaches and analyses you propose to do to develop and test your solution (for practicality, aim for a ~3 year project and cost-effectiveness – specific timeline and budget are NOT required).Outcomes and benefits – describe the benefits and outcomes of the project specific to your solution (e.g. impact on healthcare, advancement of knowledge, future work and research translation).References – use peer-reviewed sources, have clear in-text citations and a consistent bibliography, using an accepted scientific referencing style (e.g. Harvard, Vancouver, IEEE). Aim for 30-50 references.
Length: Maximum 7 A4 pages, Times New Roman size 12 font, single space, 2cm margins on each edge. References and optional appendix are excluded from this page limit.
Criteria:
1. Quality of the report content: background and aims, review of literature, project innovation, project design, project outcomes and benefits.
2. Adequate referencing, cohesiveness and logical flow of information.
