Case study scenario

You are a Registered Nurse in an acute mental health ward. You admit Mary who was transferred from a medical ward where she has been treated for a fractured humerus and multiple lacerations after a car accident. Mary had been driving and there were no passengers in the car at the time.

Mary is a 55-year-old Caucasian female. She was divorced last year after 30 years of marriage and now lives alone. Her two daughters are married and live locally. She has a mortgage on her home. Mary states that she has been unable to concentrate at work.  She fears that she is at risk of losing her job as an accounts clerk.

Mary presents as teary, and states that she feels miserable – “My daughters are better off without me.” Mary’s maternal aunt and grandmother committed suicide.

Mary states that she has lost her appetite and she has gone down a dress size. She describes difficulty in getting out of bed in the morning, and struggles to get to work on time. She has disturbed sleep and constantly feels fatigued. So much so that she no longer knits which she used to find enjoyable.

During your interview with Mary she admitted that she had intentionally crashed the vehicle in the hope that she would kill herself. She spoke in a monotone and her affect was restricted. When you orientate Mary to her room, you notice that her movements are very slow.

1. Depression and suicide are significant areas of concern in Australia.
2. Investigate and outline the incidence of both depression and suicide in Australia.
