You are a mental health Medicare accredited social worker who has recently begun a counselling private practice. You are aware that the region you live and work in has a desperate shortage of mental health services, including therapeutic counselling services, and as a result, many people do not get access to good quality mental health care. You have decided that your move to private practice will be both enriching for yourself professionally, as well as providing a valuable service for community services to refer to for therapeutic services.
Over your twenty years as a social worker, you have mainly worked in community health organisations, and for a large part you have worked in a regional organisation who uses a strengths- approach in both individual and group work with its clients. You have a good reputation in the community for your work.
The counselling frameworks that you specialise in are narrative and solution-focussed therapies. You are committed to using these frameworks, both philosophically and therapeutically, and have seen their benefits over the years in regards to their impact on clients who are disadvantaged, disempowered and oppressed.
You are aware that as part of your accreditation as a mental health social worker – including your eligibility for receiving the government’s Medicare rebate for private counselling services – is your adherence to using a narrow range of therapeutic frameworks. These frameworks are limited to ‘evidence-based’ models such as cognitive behavioural therapy and psychotherapy.
While you are aware of some of the benefits of these models, you are also aware of the benefits of the strengths-based models you use. You would like to continue to use these models as your predominant counselling frameworks and yet are aware you must legally ‘sign off’ each session with a client stating that you use the government-accredited frameworks.
