mental health nursing from a different perspective
I got a chance to experience mental health nursing from a different perspective. I was having interaction with an expert by experience and he shared his recovery process and all his experiences. I am sharing how I have developed my understanding of people with mental illness and ways to support their recovery. This was the first time I have ever had a chance to hear about mental health from a recovered consumers perspective. We had a realistic and informative conversation. He shared his recovery process, how nurses treated him in a hospital and what actually helped him during his recovery process. He shared what qualities a good nurse should possess, what consumers expect from nurses and the importance of communication and active listening in mental health. When he was first admitted to a mental health unit and shared his symptoms with the nurse. The nurse replied him saying ‘it is not a big deal’ and walked off. I asked him open-ended questions like, what he felt when the nursing staff was not actually interested to interact with him. This incidence made him feel neglected and he could not get out of this illness ever. While he was in a hospital, there was one nurse who used to come and talk to him, listen to what he was experiencing. Since then, he developed a sense of belonging, hope and being valued despite his illness. He could actually share all his problem with that particular nurse. His experience taught to differentiate the fine line between an empathetic nurse and task-oriented nurse.
In regard to my practice, I feel communication and active listening is the key to support people for their recovery. Active listening means more than hearing, giving full attention emotionally, mentally and physically (1). During the simulation, I realised how a simple conversation creates a positive vibe and helps win consumers trust. The primary focus of a mental health nurse is to work alongside consumers and their carer, continue their personal recovery and help overcome their illness symptoms (2). One of the effective communication components is active listening. I feel it is usually the most challenging yet an important skill I can offer to a consumer. In the process of listening, the best and the most therapeutic technique is to talk less and listen more (1). According to the study, nurses are often worried about what to ask or say during the conversation and might end up talking too much (1). While actively listening, we allow a space for a consumer to talk which leads to having a therapeutic effect. Less talking and more listening provides a chance for the consumer to tell their story and develop a sense of being heard (3).
