SAFETY IN MENTAL HEALTH
It is well known that long term exposure to job-related stressors could eventually lead to burnout (A state of vital exhaustion) as nurses directly care for these group of clients. The increased pressure and decreased job satisfaction affects the nurses ability to care for themselves and their clients. Furthermore issues like transference and counter transference are common occurrence in mental health. Fitzpatrick, J. (2016) states that consequences of emotional stress and burnout impacts not only the individual nurse but profession and efficiency of health care in a whole , it leads to increased absenteeism turnover of professional and impairs the functionality of whole team in patient care. Frequent stress occurs as result of dealing with acute outburst, behavioural disorder and violence directed behaviour toward nurses (Hasan,& Tumah, 2018). Use of restrain, isolation and sedation adds to the moral distress of nurses leading to emotional instability. Stress can be result of lack of self-control, conflicting values in regard to personal cultural and family values, associating self with patient situation that triggers emotional response in nurses. Therefore emotional safety is the significant safety risk often identified by mental health nurses.
Nurses with enhanced emotional stability have less possibility of exhibiting strong emotional reactions to adverse situations such as aggression, behavioural disorder of consumers. (Teng, Chang, & Hsu, 2009) states that stable emotional status assists nurses to be more proactive and successful in problem solving. Furthermore, Ward, 2011 mentions that emotional wellbeing should be further prioritised for mental health nurses as various significant factors adds to the stress of working in mental health such as greater patient acuity, challenging and unpredictable workplaces, patient aggression, increased paperwork, and reduced managerial support. However, the nurses can employ various strategies to lessen the emotional safety risk posed by the occupation, sometimes by giving meaning to the event, taking pride in the profession and looking at their own role as patient support and positive cases of clients achievements could be seen as reward of the profession(Fitzpatric, 2016).
To conclude, ensure safety at work by decreasing restrictive practice, prevent aggression and violence, responding to change in patient’s condition promptly and screening associated risk to patients and staffs at the workplace (National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards, 2018). Form strategies and support the culture of safety by involving people with mental health experience. Safety risk can prevent by providing training to the workforce on trauma- informed care by active listening, responding clients with empathy without any criticism or blaming them, retain in mind that their behaviours may be trauma-related (National practice standards for mental health workforce, 2013).
