Introduction
This assignment requires you to analyse the role of the theory of Multiple Representations (developed by Lesh, Cramer, Doerr, Post and Zawojeweski) in the teaching and learning of measurement in Foundation Phase Mathematics. Reflect on the brief below to guide your response.
Brief
The Common Core States Standards of Mathematics (2020) stipulate that learners need opportunities to solve problems. Additionally, learners need multiple opportunities to communicate mathematical ideas with others, and that teachers should focus on student understanding rather than the 'right' answer. Mathematics has many types of representations, which build upon one another as mathematical ideas become more abstract. Learners within the Foundation Phase can represent this type of mathematical proficiency in five different modes, emphasizing their transitions between representation, making their learning valuable and meaningful.
A. Essay
Reflect on the brief above and write an essay where you critically analyse the role of the Theory of Multiple Representations (developed by Lesh, Cramer, Doerr, Post and Zawojeweski) in the teaching and learning of measurement in Foundation Phase Mathematics. Your essay needs to include the following and, in the order, as listed below:
1. A detailed, critical analysis of the key concepts associated with the Theory of Multiple Representations and its importance in the teaching and learning of mathematics in the Foundation Phase. Provide relevant examples which focus on the content area Measurement to support your discussion. Extensive research is required to respond to this point comprehensively (this should include reference to a minimum of two journal articles).
2. Critically discuss the role of the teacher in the progression of teaching measurement across the Foundation Phase for the topic Mass. You need to look at CAPS to see the progression of learning for this topic. For the purpose of this explanation, focus on the progression of learning (overview) evident in CAPS.
3. Outline the progression of learning for the topic Mass. Discuss how the learning of the topic Mass progresses considering vocabulary, learning to measure and learning to calculate without practical measuring.
4. Describe an estimation activity relating to the topic Mass using a grocery item as the unit of measurement. In your activity discussion, be sure to include:
5. Your opinion on the role that the Theory of Multiple Representations plays in the teaching and learning of Foundation Phase mathematics.
B. Creating a Resource
Section B of your assignment requires you to apply your knowledge by creating a Measurement Resource for the Foundation Phase Mathematics classroom. Consider the following to complete this task:
1. You are required to design / create a measurement resource / manipulative that you feel is essential to develop the understanding of Mass, a topic / concept of Measurement in the Foundation Phase. You can choose the grade that you wish to focus on, but it is suggested that you make a resource / manipulative that is flexible enough to cover all the grades so that it can be added to your teaching toolkit. Ensure that your resource has two or more of representations below:
2. You are required to take detailed photographs of the process of designing and making your resource / manipulative. At least 6 photographs need to be included. For each photograph included, provide a caption / short sentence explaining what is captured in the photograph. The final photograph included must be of you with the completed resource / manipulative. Please make sure these photographs are clear and large enough. We need to be able to see your face clearly. Unclear photographs make it extremely difficult to award marks for the resource / manipulative.
3. Finally, write a paragraph where you explain / justify why you chose the specific resource / manipulative you decided to make and why you feel it is essential to develop measurement (mass) skills in the Foundation Phase. In this paragraph briefly outline 2 activities that could be done using your resource / manipulative.
