Assignment Task

Main Objective of the assessment

The main objective of the assessment is to allow students acquire theoretical and practical knowledge for business management by covering issues and debates in management research and provide knowledge of relevant research methods and techniques for Masters level project work. The assessment provides students opportunities to use and recognise the dominant role of both quantitative and qualitative methods in management research and the need to enable the understanding of research reports and use this information to improve the quality of work and decision-making. The assessment examines the following Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):

1. Comprehensively understand different research designs and its appropriateness to study different research problems. Approved BBS Coursework Brief Template 2021/22 2 of 8

2. Identify and combine complex research data on a given topic and identify an appropriate methodology for management issues.

3. Evaluate and justify systemically the use of quantitative and qualitative research methods.

4. Demonstrate a variety of skills including recording, communication and explanation of reading research material involved.

Description of the Assessment

You are expected to produce an individual research report (a proposal words with a +/- margin of 10%) addressing each of the following tasks on the topic of your research interest. The assessment assesses all the ILOs 1,2,3 and 4.

1. Introduction and Research Background

In this section you need to set out the nature of the study, its purpose, structure and introduce your topic that you are going to research.

1.1 Background and rationale In this section you should provide:

  • the background to the research topic
  • the rationale for your research and potential contribution to theory and practice
  • Problem statement (Identified Problem and Gap in Literature)
  • Why is this research required? Why is it important? You are not required to have a detailed literature review in this section but you need to provide brief details on how you are filling a gap in the research. You also need to demonstrate that your aim and objectives are informed by the current state of scholarship.
  • How is your research located within the existing academic field?

Research aim and objectives

The aim of your research (The aim is focussed and reflects the main focus of the research).

  • SMART objectives and/or research sub-questions (Derived from the gaps and current thinking from the review of the current literature).
  • Statement of hypothesis(es), if relevant.

2. Literature review and evaluation

Provide a critical review of literature, make sure you carry out evaluation rather than a description of the literature (Valid, relevant, up-to-date academic and peer reviewed journal articles should be used). You need to provide a critical appreciation of relevant literature and its use to support argument. Identify gaps in the literature. This section gives you the opportunity to discuss the contributions of other authors to your research topic and relevant theoretical concepts and frameworks that you will use to underpin your research.

3. Research Methodology

Approved BBS Coursework Brief Template 2021/22 3 of 8 In this part you need to present, evaluate and justify the different components of your research methodology. Justification of the choices made is particularly important. You need to clearly articulate how the study design is chosen and developed to achieve the research aim and objectives. This section should provide:

  • Research philosophy
  • Research approach and strategy (e.g. Inductive, deductive, survey etc.)
  • Research method (Qualitative, quantitative etc.)
  • Research Design (Methods of data collection and analysis)

4. Planning (Overall Presentation) and ethical considerations

  • Ethical considerations (Discuss how you have taken into consideration relevant research Ethics issues. You are advised to consider Brunel University Ethical guidelines for research.)
  • Potential limitations of the study.
  • Show that the researcher is aware of any potential challenges and thus better able to manage the research process. o A good proposal will not only show awareness but also highlight potential options to overcome challenges and minimise limitations.
  • Gantt Chart (or similar) should be provided to give a detailed timetable of all aspects of research (e.g. ethics application; literature review; background research; data collection; data analysis; writing deadlines etc.)
