Phones Inc. Phones Inc (PI). is an internationally renowned manufacturer of mobile Phones. The CEO Janet Vanner has become increasingly concerned about organisational profits. PI operates out of Australia and has subsidiaries in three countries – Malaysia, Singapore and Brazil. PI build and sell phones to countries around the world. Numerous parts of the phones are produced in Malaysia and Brazil and most of the design engineers operate out of Singapore. Phones are assembled in Singapore and also Australia. Janet has uncovered issues at PI related to embracing the rich value of working with diverse people. There is a lack of recruitment of women in Australia. Managers are actively ignoring job applications of women, even when their skills are above and beyond other candidates. Janet fears repercussions of this recruitment discrimination in the form of legal action from rejected candidates. Last year it was reported in an Australian newspaper that a competitor, also operating in Brazil, had increased their production at the Brazil plant due to cheaper labour costs. It was also reported that working conditions were poor and employees were made to work 16 hour days. Janet is unsure of the working conditions within the Brazil plant. She is concerned that the media are now looking for a similar story and will target Phones Inc. Assembly teams in Australia are highly unionised, with 60 per cent of employees belonging to a trade union. Since the Australian Government’s de regulation of penalty rates (where PI would usually pay double time for employees working on a weekend), the unions have been voicing their concern that PI employees will miss out on income they rely on. Expatriate training for those leaving Australia to work in Malaysia is limited to half a day. HR refers staff to their online resources and assumes that every person has the same needs when they agree to work in another country. There are no feedback avenues for employees to comment on the effectiveness of the expatriate training.

Questions 1. How should Janet approach the Unions concern that PI may drop double time pay on weekends? Consider how the regulations may affect PI and employees. Consider how the regulation will affect relations between PI and employees.

2. Advise Janet on the options for expatriate training and development. How would you re-design the expatriate training? Consider different modes of training for the program.

3. What would you include in a diversity policy to enhance the diverse workforce at PI? What actions can Janet take to change the attitudes of managers regarding employing women? Consider management training and recruitment options.

4. Why should Janet be concerned with corporate social responsibility in the Brazil plant? What ethical HR procedures could he put in place?
