• This assignment has two parts. Part one is about reading an article and providing a critique. The second part asks you to collect a sample, check normality, and perform hypothesis tests.
• The overall goal of this assignment is to show you can apply your learning in a real-world situation.
• Worth: 10% of total mark for the course.
• Must work in groups of 2, 3 or 4.

Learning objectives

Through this assignment, demonstrate that you have obtained the following learning objectives:

• Read someone’s description of their data analysis and provide a thoughtful critique.
• Collect a random sample.
• Evaluate the normality of a data set.
• Perform hypothesis tests and calculate confidence intervals.
• Communicate the results of the above.
• Discuss type I and II errors.

Assignment Details

To complete the assignment, follow these steps. Note: These are the steps needed to complete the assignment but are not what you submit. See What you need to submit for information on what you hand in.

Though some groups decide to break up the work so that some work on Part 1 and others on Part 2, it is important to note that all group members need to know how to do both parts as you can be assessed individually on this content both in quizzes and the final exam. Also Part 1 and Part 2 are not equal length and it would unlikely to be fair if that is how you divided the work.

Part 1 – Critique paper

For this section, read a published paper and provide a critique of their analysis.

Note: In this paper, there are two data sets: 1) before the students go on the trip and 2) after the students go on the trip. As the students are the same before and after, the authors do their analysis by subtracting “before” and “after” to give us one data set called the “change from beginning to end of the program”. This is what was done in the last two columns of Table 2. The analysis done in Table 3 is based on the difference data. This is a legitimate way to do analysis on before and after data.

Note: In Table 3, you will find Though this is common in published articles, it is not quite correct notation. This indicates when their results are significant at 0.05 or 0.01. That is, this is their way of indicating the level of significance. Though this is not correct, it is not an appropriate critique. That is, do not use as a critique their level of significance.

Step 2: Start your critique of the paper by considering all four of these areas. You do not need to write anything detailed at this point. Rather familiarize yourself with possible areas of critique.

• Sampling method:
  • How were the participants in the study chosen?
  • How was the data collected?
• Model:
  • What model did they use to find their p-values?
  • Based on the information in the article, was their choice of model appropriate?
• Calculations:
  • Did they calculate the p-values correctly?
• Conclusions:
  • Based on their decisions (i.e., reject or do not reject H₀), were their conclusions appropriate?
  • Is there anything missing in their analysis that would help support their conclusions?

Step 3: Choose two out of the four areas and write a statement that includes the following for each of the two areas:

1. Heading: Name of area.
2. A statement of one thing that is wrong with the article for that area.
