Task Overview:

Your group of 5-6 people has been engaged by a small clothing business to provide guidance on global expansion plans.

The business, named ShellCoop Clothing, is a retailer specialising in clothing for people interested in outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, fishing, and nature walks.

They have been very successful in Australia and the company wants to expand internationally. They have high expectations and are ready to scale up their production. Meeting new demands in a new market is not a problem.

What they need help with is where to go and what factors in the general environment they need to consider. You have been tasked with identifying an appropriate market to enter and the forces that shape that market. You should identify how these forces could impact ShellCoop's entry in to your chosen market.

In your answer, you should thoroughly research the market (you have the resources of Macquarie University Library Databases - links are included below) and other forces using a structured framework such as PESTEL.

Importantly, you must discuss WHY the factors you identify are important for ShellCoop and what the implications are for the firm.

Structure and Advice

The structure of your report is extremely important and will be crucial in communicating your ideas to the reader. You have 2,500 words at your disposal and you need to make sure that what you say is relevant.

Introduction

An introduction is a road map of your report. It is NOT an introduction to the subject "Managing in a Global Environment". Your introduction must state:

. They key sections of your report
. Major findings from each section of your report
. The main implications for ShellCoop

Your introduction should be no longer than 250 words and should be in no fewer than 2 paragraphs.

Its a good idea to create a framework for your report (section breakdown). That way you can write a model introduction and, once you have finished, go back an re-write it. Remember, the introduction is the last thing that gets done before you submit.

Body

The body of your report should be structured according to your analysis. Remember that the aim of a report is to discuss the implications for ShellCoop, NOT to list information. Rather than listing points under a PESTEL framework, you should gather your data separately and then use the paragraphs to discuss implications, weaving important information from your PESTEL into the paragraphs. This will be discussed further in the lecture, and your tutor will be able to give you guidance on this

Paragraphs should have their own internal structure. They should be approximately 150 words long. This is long enough to make a major point, but not so long that you start to loose track. Use a claim, data, warrant structure. Make a claim, provide data that supports the claim, and then write about why it matters - what are the implications of that claim. This will keep you on track.

Conclusion

This is similar to your introduction. You must summarise the key points identified in your report. It should have no new information.

References

Referencing is vital. It provides support for your arguments, gives you evidence and credibility, and acknowledges the work of others. You must use the Harvard Reference style (see iLearn and the library for more information). You need in-text references as well as a final reference list for all references mentioned in your report. You will lose marks if your reference list is incomplete and/or inconsistent. Failure to reference will result in you receiving a 0 for your report.

You must have a minimum of 5 references - sourced via the Macquarie University Library databases.

Importantly, meeting the minimum number of references does not constitute a 'pass'. You must use referencing intelligently and integrate it through your report to provide evidence and support for your position/recommendation.

Referencing is not difficult and there are lots of resources that can help you make sure you adhere to the guidelines. You MUST review the referencing guide created by the library and available on the MGMT1002 Unit iLearn Site.

Appendices

You should use appendices for any information that may be useful for the reader to know, but is not necessary. For example, you may wish to include the information from your PESTEL as an appendix. You should NEVER force a reader to read your appendices. Make sure you name your appendices in order (e.g. Appendix 1, Appendix 2 etc.)

Headings

Headings are a useful way of sign posting your report, and you are encouraged to use them. Make sure they are descriptive (NOT generic terms such as 'Body') and that they are numbered correctly.

Cover Page

You should include a cover page (which you may create yourself) which contains the names and student numbers of all members of your group. Failure to do so may mean that marks are not allocated to students.

Formatting

There are no specific formatting guidelines. However, as a general rule you should use a standard font in a reasonable size (Arial, Calibri, etc. size 11 or 12) with line spacing of at least 1.15.

Word Count

You should include the word count in the footer of your report.
Submission
Your report must be submitted no later than 10am on Monday 12 October via Turnitin. You must submit in Word document format ONLY.
There are no hard copies nor will emailed copies be accepted.
Students may resubmit multiple times up until the due date. You should be aware that Turnitin will generate an Originality Report on your first submission, but subsequent submissions may take up to 24 hours.
There is no set maximum Turnitin score. Turnitin is designed as an indicator, your tutor will use her/his judgement. A score of 0% is normal and nothing to worry about.
Late Submissions:
Late assessment submissions must be submitted through the appropriate submission link in iLearn. No extensions will be granted unless an application for Special Consideration is made and approved. There will be a deduction of 20% of the total available marks made from the total awarded mark for each 24 hour period or part thereof that the submission is late. Late submissions will not be accepted after solutions have been discussed and/or made available.
