Niccolo Machiavelli (b. 1469; d. 1527) lived during a time of significant conflict and change. Machiavelli benefited from a robust education and eventually found work as a Florentine civil servant, and later as a diplomat. His work, access, and position afforded Machiavelli and his wife and family some measure of luxury. However changes in Florence’s leadership and power structure eventually led to accusations of treason against him and to subsequent imprisonment (Parks, 2009; King, 2007).
