Introduction A warm welcome to our current and future leaders. In this unit students engage in practical reflexivity and self authorship. They examine the various leadership perspectives and styles, and engage in deep reflection of their personal leadership development and values. By employing various resources, students ponder how such values were acquired, then question what actions are suitable and discuss the consequences of living out these values within the context of their work and/or personal experiences and roles as leaders. In addition, the team project provides the opportunity for students to explore theoretical frameworks by examining the practices of real leaders within a multicultural and global context. As a final build up to profiling and developing self leadership with global awareness, students are provided with a leadership series that includes a myriad of leadership styles, values and strategies adopted by leaders in different contexts. Assessment 1: Reflective Log Students are required to submit an individual reflective log that highlights the key concepts and theories addressed in the weekly lectures delivered from teaching week 1 to teaching week 5. The word count for the reflective log is 1,500 words (students are given a leeway of 10% - the word count must not be less than 1,350 words and not more than 1,650 words) and students are required to define and describe the key concepts and theories addressed in the following topics: Topic 1: Why Global Leadership Topic 2: Followership Topic 3: Leading Global Teams Topic 4: Thinking Globally Topic 5: Responsible and Ethical Leadership Assessment 2: Investigation In small groups (pending class size), students are given the opportunity to explore the application of theoretical frameworks by examining the global leadership style and practice of a leader within real world organisational settings. In doing so, student groups will be exposed to a practicing leader from Industry who will share their experience as a practicing leader in class. Students are required to ask questions, interview and engage with the appointed leader in class in order to investigate how this individual practices their leadership style in terms of appreciating diversity, providing vision and direction, leading change and shaping organisational culture and values. Student groups will then consolidate and present their findings in a concise and well-written 2,500-word report (students are given a leeway of 10% > the word count must not be less than 2,250 words and not more than 2,750 words). In doing so, students will provide real world examples of leadership practice in relation to the following topics remaining topics covered in the semester: Topic 6: Diversity, women and leadership Topic 7: Vision and Direction (teaching week 7) Topic 8: Leading Change (teaching week 8) Topic 9: Shaping organisational culture and values (teaching week 9) Given that the appointed leader will attend the seminar from teaching week 6 to teaching week 9, student groups are strongly advised to draft and prepare their topical interview questions prior to attending class. This will facilitate the ability and success in gathering information relevant to the weekly topics.
