Case Study: -Many Korean children and children of other nationalities have been adopted by U.S. Americans.Generally, these children were reared in homes where the parents were not of the nationality of the adopted child. Sometimes after the children become adults, they return to their native country to learn about people of their own ethnic heritage. Would language differences pose a problem? What cultural problems would these children have? Case study (Individual) – worth 35% For this assignment you are asked to choose (in discussion with your class lecturer) a case study from any chapter of the textbook and prepare a 20- minute, slide-enhanced class presentation with a brief introduction in a foreign language, as explained below. In your presentation you will demonstrate your knowledge of relevant theories, recent research and practical implications of the selected case. You will also be able to demonstrate your international communication skills. You will achieve all this by: (1) Critically discussing how the relevant theories (learnt in the chapter where the selected case is located) apply in the case. (2) Supporting your analysis of the case with research from at least 15 additional sources. At least 10 of these need to be academic and the rest from other sources, such as reliable media (e.g. The Economist), NGOs, governmental, international and professional organisations, and official corporate websites. All sources need to be referenced in your presentation slides. (3) Discussing practical implications of this case for intercultural communication. (4) Introducing the case in a foreign language (other than your own mother tongue) from the Asia-Pacific region. The language should be non-European and preferably Mandarin or Hindi. Assume your audience to consist of business people and professionals. The introduction should only involve 3-4 sentences and be equivalent to 40-50 words in English. You should do some research on communication etiquette appropriate to the relevant cultural and business context. A good place to start with your translation is Google Translate but be aware the translation may not be perfect. You may want to then approach one of your classmates who may be native speakers of the language for assistance. Pronunciation accuracy will not be marked. You may nevertheless wish to make an effort to appear professional (e.g. avoid reading from your notes while having a written translation on your slides). Here is an example of what could be included in the introduction: Culturally appropriate greeting and opening (e.g. Hello, welcome to my presentation about X). Introduce yourself (My name is Y). Introduce your topic (I would like to talk to you about XZY). Add something else (e.g. I only speak limited C so I hope you don’t mind if I continue in English. Thank you). Your presentation should take approximately 15 minutes followed by 5 minutes for discussion where you try to engage the audience in expressing their views and testing what they have learned. Times may vary depending on class size. There will be a mark for the presenter’s efforts and skills in motivating fellow students to participate in lively class discussion.
