Context

Writing self-reflection reports is a common task in the workplace. This normally take places at the end of the year when managers are expected to reflect upon their performance during the past year and find out where they may want to improve next year.

In your case being as CEO, the board of directors may ask you to write a reflective report to reflect upon, analyse and evaluate three topics on strategies your company has attempted and discussed in the last few years. Equally importantly, as ethical and social expectations on businesses increase, the board of directors require you to evaluate the ethical issues surrounding the strategies as well.

Management research also indicates that developing self-awareness has several advantages: personal growth, career development, and an enhanced ability to understand business strategies. Despite these advantages, we often resist opportunities to increase our self-awareness of new ideas in the field of strategic management. We try to protect our self-esteem. We may think that we already know ourselves well enough.

Or we may not want to take the time out of our busy schedules to engage in self-reflection. In short, developing a willingness and ability to engage in self-reflection, is a critical managerial skill that is not easily learned yet reaps many rewards.

Keeping a learning journal is a structured way to develop this skill. This journal is a confidential, written record of your personal development through the class. The learning journal helps you to reflect on how you have understood new knowledge in the field of strategic management and its impact of sustainability of your organisation as well as the society.

Instructions

This is an individual assessment. This assessment requires you to prepare a ‘self-reflective learning journal’ focusing on any three of these four topics: business strategy, corporate strategy, international/global strategy and corporate governance.

The purpose of this assignment is to develop a deeper understanding of the importance of self-awareness in relation to the positive and dark side of strategic management concepts and theoriesrelating to the four topics. Your learning journal is based on your insights and provides you with an opportunity to reflect on the ways in which the issues and concepts raised in the course and self-reading have affect you personally in your role as a manager.

The completed assignment should be between 1500 words and double spaced. Your critical self-reflective learning journal is a confidential document. Only your Lecturer-in-charge will read it.

Process for completing the assignment

Step 1: Review our lecture slides and textbook resources in Week 2-4, Week 9-11 to review the topics on business strategy, corporate strategy, international/global strategy and corporate governance.

Step 2: Choose any three of the topics that are of particular interest to you. Read the corresponding textbook chapters and related journal articles on these topics.

Step 3:

1) Explain why you think the topics are of particular important to you as a manager.
2) Reflect on the learning of the strategic management using your personal experience. You can ask yourself these questions:

  • How have these concepts have changed your business world view?
  •  How have these concepts helped you to view your personal life strategy/experiences differently? Many strategic management concepts and tools are equally relevant to our
  • personal life (recall our in-class “personal strategy” exercises)
  •  With your newly gained knowledge in strategic management, how would have you done differently if today you are in a similar situation that happened to you in the past?

3) Explain which is your preferred strategy and provide justifications.

Step 4: Critically analyse the chosen three strategic management concepts. This may include the pros and cons of each strategy, how the strategy may help develop or prevent developing sustainable competitive advantage. Your analysis should be supported by your research on these concepts. For your research of these strategies, you can use resources on Harvard Business Review, Financial Times, Forbes and some quality business journals (Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review).

Step 5: Analyse the implications on environment and society related to the strategic management concepts (Week 4); reflect how as a manager you are planning to address the implications on environment and society.

Step 6: Evaluate the strategies used by any companies that are relevant to the concepts you chose. You can use any company in business world and their strategies as illustration. For instance, Walmart uses cost-leadership as its business strategy and it proves it is effective in developing its competitive advantage; whereas Jetblue  attempted to use Blue Ocean Strategy and it turns out it ended up stuck in the middle.

Structure

1.Executive summary (50 words)

2. Define each topic provided (three topics of: business strategy, corporate strategy, international/global strategy and corporate governance) and indicate why each of the topic is of important to you as a manager (150 words)

3.Reflect on your learning of strategic management concepts using evidence from your personal experience, analyse the chosen concepts and the implications on environment and society, and justify your preferred strategy (1200 words in total)

1) Topic 1/2/3 (350 words for each topic):
? Self-reflection:

  • a) How has this concept changed how you view business world?
  • b) How has this concept helped you to view my own life differently? Many strategic management concepts and tools are equally relevant to our personal life.
  • c) With your newly gained knowledge in strategic management, how would have you done differently if today you are in a similar situation that happened to you in the past?

? Critically analysis

  • a) What are the pros and cons of each concept?
  • b) How does each concept help organisations achieve sustainable competitive advantage?
  • c) How might each concept prevent organisations sustaining their competitive advantage?

 Implications on environment and society

Analyse the implications on environment and society (Week 4); reflect how as a manager you are planning to address the implications:

  • a) Which stakeholders (environmental, societal or others) are likely to impacted and how? (Week 1, stakeholder perspective)
  • b) What are the implications of each strategy on environment and society and the resulting tradeoffs? You can derive your analysis from ethical theories on Week 4 (deontology, virtue ethics, utilitarianism, relativism, social contract theory etc.)
  • c) How would you, as a manger, plan to address the implications on environment and society?

? Evaluate any strategies used by companies.

  • a) Are there any companies in business world that are using the strategies that you choose for your journal? You can use the business cases we discussed in class and those cases on LEO site as your illustration.
  • b) Are these strategies proved to be successful or unsuccessful? And why? For instance, Walmart uses cost-leadership as its business strategy and it proves it is effective in developing its competitive advantage. It is successful because Walmart uses a highly efficient logistic management system which can help cut costs throughout the whole supply chain. Whereas Jetblue attempted to use Blue Ocean Strategy and it ended up stuck in the middle. The reason is that Jetblue could not balance out the tradeoffs between cost- leadership and differentiation, which results in stuck in the middle.
