Task Background 

It’s difficult to calculate how much poor communication costs business, industry and government  each year but estimates suggest billions. Poorly worded or inefficient emails, careless reading or  listening to instructions, documents that go unread due to poor design, hastily presenting inaccurate  information, sloppy proofreading are some common examples of poor communication that result in  inevitable costs. 

When it comes to the interpersonal relationships at workplace, it would be rare when an employee  would admit that he/she makes assumptions and draws conclusions without taking the time to verify  information with someone ‘in the know’. In reality, it happens all the time, both in written and verbal  communication. For example, a manager who speaks of “breeding efficiency” and the employee  who interprets the words as code for “layoffs.” In fact, the manager could be referring to the need to  be more efficient with the supply of office copier paper. It's bad enough when assumptions are left  to fester privately; such miscommunication compounds if an employee spreads false assumption to  others. 

Task Overview 

This assessment requires you to work together in a group to research, develop and compile a plan  for interpersonal relationship development. You will need to research the interpersonal skill on  Communication, reflect as a team on how this skill was utilised within your group and prepare a  plan to improve the use of this skill within the workplace.

Plan preparation instructions 

Your group is required to use the group forums set up within the LMS to discuss, design, research  and prepare a plan to improve Communication within the workplace. 

You may also use any other type of technology to facilitate group interaction (phone, skype, email  etc..) in addition to the LMS. If so, you will need to organise your chat history into one file and email  it to me, which will be used as evidence to mark your group forum contributions for your A3.  

This plan will be divided into three distinct parts: 

• Research – Research the role of Communication within the workplace and present your  findings. Research should include (but is not limited to) a definition of the concept,  evidence to suggest its value or lack of value to workplace relationships and the  characteristics of effective Communication. Use academic sources where possible. 

• Group reflection – Reflect as a group on how you have used Communication within your  team. Did you find it improved your interpersonal relationships, helped facilitate effective  group work and or improved the quality of your assignment? It is recommended that you  incorporate theory from your research and apply it to your reflection (e.g., the theory said  xyz and we experienced abc).  

• Plan – Based on your findings from research and reflection, develop a plan to improve the  use of Communication within workplace. Your plan should provide specific, actionable  recommendations that help the organisation increase the use and improve the quality of  Communication. Again, it is suggested you use findings from your academic research to  give support to the actions suggested in your plan.
