1. Introduction:

Copper and silver were mined at various locations in the Ochil Hills until 1807. Evidence of the mining activity can be seen in the woods at the back of Bridge of Allan, including the prominent, blocked entrance in my Wood. The mines have been long abandoned as uneconomic, but recent increases in commodity prices have caused various mining prospects to be reassessed. The Airthrey Mining Company (AMC) was formed two years ago and has already undertaken much prospecting and proven that there are small but rich reserves of copper well worth extracting. Considerable public relations work has persuaded the local communities of the value of the project to Scotland’s strategic economic development and outline planning permission has been agreed. AMC believes that there should be sufficient reserves for long-term operation and many experts believe that the high copper prices should continue for many years. However, AMC wants to establish the first phase of the mine quickly so that the mine can take full advantage of current market conditions. AMC has already undertaken many studies of the proposed mine and extracts from the reports are provided.

2. Task:

You have been asked as a project management consultant to help AMC assess whether the Bridge of Allan copper mine is financially viable and recommend a project plan. You should produce a report for the AMC Board of Directors in time for its next meeting on 10 January 2020, so that if approved the development of the mine can start as soon as possible. The report should provide:

• a complete project plan illustrating the logic of the project and identifying the dates for milestones; 
• an assessment of the project’s financial viability, assuming the best estimates for the price of copper; 
• an exploration of the effects of changes in the copper price to assess whether the project’s viability is very dependent on the copper price; 
• an analysis of any options for the design of the project; 
• any other points to be raised that may impact the decision, the development of the mine and its exploitation; 
• a concluding chapter that lists enumerates all main findings of the points above states all decisions (and their impact) to be taken by the board and all other recommendations that are relevant to the development of the mine and its exploitation.

Sensible approximations should be made where appropriate. The report should be written using guidelines for reporting (see Appendix) and be no longer than 2,500 words (excluding figures, tables, list of references and appendices). Include a section in the final chapter summarising possible further studies that you would recommend to provide a more complete assessment.

3. Geology:
A geological survey has been completed so the volume and quality of the copper ore can be estimated with a good degree of accuracy. The geological conditions appear good and no major problems are expected in developing the mine. It is planned to access four large veins of copper ore with reserves estimated in Table 1. It is estimated that the ore contains about 5% copper.
