Assignment Task

Description

In this assessment, you will adopt the role of a portfolio, program, or project manager within an organization, which could be your current workplace or one you're well-acquainted with. The main task is to review the organisation’s project’s approach to identify stakeholders and understand their perspectives to develop strategies for the management of their interests. The literature* you collect for this assignment could be used as part of your next assignment so you should consider your selection of a suitable project before you commence this task. Your findings of this literature review should be compiled into the given format/structure aimed at senior management, offering research-informed recommendations for them to consider and act upon.

Task Details

Your task is to carry out a survey of the literature* on ‘identifying and analysing project stakeholders’, and ‘stakeholder management tools and approaches’ to inform the review. You are looking for contemporary and seminal literature on the topics which is relevant to the sector of your organisation/project types.

In the format of a report, you will discuss this literature*, considering its strengths, weaknesses and relevance to your organisation’s projects. Also in the report you will make a recommendation on ‘identifying and analysing project stakeholders’, and ‘stakeholder management tools and approaches’ for the organisation’s projects (or a particular project).

You should follow the following structure:

REPORT STRUCTURE

For this assignment, provide the following:

  • Mark sheet/rubric (Download rubric file that includes marksheet)
  • Report cover sheet

Executive summary

An executive summary provides a concise and comprehensive overview of the report. Its purpose is to provide busy executives, decision-makers, and readers with a quick understanding of the key objectives, analysis, findings, and recommendations without requiring them to go through the entire document.

  • Table of contents, List of Tables (if required), List of Figures (if required)

Introduction

Introduce the purpose of your report and its structure.

Organisational context

In this section, describe the organisational and project context for which you are preparing the literature review. You can base this on a PMO with which you have experience, or on a case study taken from the literature. Include details such as the type of projects undertaken, the current approach to ‘identifying and analysing project stakeholders’, and ‘stakeholder management tools and approaches’, problems being experienced in these areas etc. Specify whether this report is for all projects in the organisation, a type of project in the organisation, or a specific project.

Literature review

Structure this section in two-parts:

  • The identification and analysis of project stakeholders (both internal and external).
  • Stakeholder management tools and approaches

Summarise, compare and contrast the literature* you have found which is relevant to these topics and the domain of the organisation/project/projects. Select the most relevant and reliable 3 or 4 peer-reviewed journal articles/scholarly book chapters per topic (i.e. total reviewed 7 – 8 pieces of literature).

Ensure you explicitly justify why your choice of literature* is reliable (e.g. date of publication, whether it has been peer-reviewed and is based on evidence) and discuss the relevance in terms of strengths and weaknesses of the argument (e.g. is the research study focused on a sector/industry similar to your organisation?).

Use signposts to increase the readability of your review. Signposts demonstrate to the marker that you are addressing the requirements. Examples of signposts include:

  • The weaknesses of Smith’s (2018) article is… [as highlighting “weaknesses” is a requirement of the task.]

  • Smith (2018) compared to Brown (2019)… [as “comparing” is a requirement of the task]

  • Smith’s (2018) study is of greater relevance than Brown’s (2019) because… [as assessing “relevancy” is a requirement of the task]

Conclusions

Summarise your findings (i.e. what did you discover from conducting the literature review?).
