As a part of this Work Integrated Learning (WIL) assessment task, you are required to complete the ‘Becoming a Leader’ micro-credential. This credential is designed to assist you to:

1. Recognise and acknowledge contemporary leadership concepts

2. Align your actions with the values of an effective leader

3. Be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of your own leadership skills

4. Begin to make more informed leadership decisions

5. Recognise situations that call for strong leadership; and, 

6. Have a clear action plan for further developing personal leadership skills. 

The micro-credential comprises of the following three modules: Module 1 – The leadership process; Module 2 – Personal leadership skills; and, Module 3 – Leadership skills action plan.

To complete the ‘Becoming a Leader’ micro-credential, you are required to access the micro-credential through the Course Canvas site by clicking ‘Modules’ on the left-hand sidebar and navigating to the Creds module. A copy of the badge or the unique URL is required for submission in this assignment. You are required to provide a link to your ‘Becoming a Leader’ micro-credential badge on the Title page of your Assessment 2 Part B – Leadership Development Plan. Use the instructions linked on the credential launch page in Canvas to claim your badge and to get your unique URL. 

In order to qualify for a badge, you will need to achieve the stated requirements for the credential. Please refer to the credential launch page for more details including marking turnaround times on submission-type assessments. Badges may take up to 24 hours to be issued.

Overview:

This second part of the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) assessment task allows students to apply their knowledge and skills into practical situations. It is assessed through a real workplace context where feedback from industry is integral to students’ experience. This assessment is designed to lead you from critical analysis of your role model to reflect on how you can improve your own leadership qualities and effectiveness through three learning stages: a) Observation/Research; b) Leadership Development Plan; and, c) Feedback.

At stage 1, you will build on the knowledge gained from the completion of the ‘Becoming a Leader’ micro-credential, and feedback provided by an Industry Speaker in Week 3 who will outline some of the difficulties that leaders face. You will then be required to reflect on the Industry speaker’s presentation and use that knowledge to select a person whom you consider to be a successful and effective leader. Then, through your observation or research, you will identify the person’s leadership traits, behaviours and qualities. The learning outcome of this stage is that you are challenged to apply the theories in this course with your research or observation.

For the second stage, you are asked to reflect on your own leadership, based on what you learnt from the research/observation of your role model, and to consider how your own leadership qualities could be improved. At this stage, you are required to create a leadership development plan. 

In the final stage, you must seek feedback on your plan from an established leader. This leader can be anyone you know who holds a leadership position in an organisation. 

By going through these three stages, you should be able to critically analyse and evaluate leadership theories and practices and understand how to improve your own leadership effectiveness and qualities.
