Midterm Project Instructions- PYTHON

Midterm project – Boring Space Dragon Adventure - The Text Based Game

For the midterm, we will build a text based, simple, interactive game. The game will utilize all of the skills we have learned up until this point and create an interesting and exciting experience. You notice that you interact with the game by typing in commands, and then the program does something. Also look at a Zork game written in Python  but don't worry, this is way more complex than what you will have to do for the midterm project. Notice that one of the challenges of Zork is that it does not tell the user what is going on (room announcements), explain what you can do, or even how the game works, but relies on you guessing the right words to play the game. In our game, we are going to build something easier to use and a lot easier to navigate.

Please see the sample room layout, you can have any layout you like, but remember you need to have at least five rooms.

Boring Space Dragon Adventure

The project is called the Boring Space Dragon Adventure, because you can make the game exciting, boring, interesting, or adventurous. You can write your game about traveling to distant planets, exploring the forest, making sandwiches, or literally anything else you can imagine.

There are a few simple rules to the project:

1.     You need to have a plan

2.     There needs to be a story

3.     There needs to be at least five locations (also called “rooms”)

a.     You will need to provide a map of your game

b.     Each room needs to have an informational greeting (see more about this below)

4.     There needs to be at least two characters that you can have a conversation with (also called “interactions”)

5.     There needs to be a “health” indicator

6.     There needs to be something to hold items (like a backpack or a bag)

7.     There needs to be something to hold money, credits, coins such as a wallet, purse, pouch

8.     The game should loop forever (ie. keep on looping) unless the game is over (for example, you reach the end of the game, you die, etc and the loop is broken)

9.     There needs to be user interaction so the player can enter a number and navigate the game

When you are finished, you will submit three things

1.     Your plan for the game

a.     What is going to happen?

b.     Where does it take place?

c.     What is the story?

2.     Your room map

a.     See example room map

3.     Your python file containing the game

a.     Everything should be contained in a single.py file

Your entire game must be contained in the single python file. The entire program will run in a while loop, waiting for user input in each room. Since the game is modular, be smart about how you code the game, most of it will involve copying and pasting with minor changes.

Informational greeting:

When you enter each room, there needs to be a printout of important variables. This could be something like the following example:

You are in the office. There is a stapler and a lightbulb. You are in good health. There is a door to the hallway.

Or

You are in Sector 1, the first star base of the Federation. You look around and look at all the stars and you admire the many shiny ships. Your wallet is empty. Your backpack has a strange tool in it. You are at 86% health. In front of you there is a small door that says “enter” and behind you the endless void of space.

Example plan: Space Game

Rooms: the forest, the bar, a cave, the well, the village
Interactions: the barman, the village elder.

Health: dead, poor, average, good
Items:
rope, hammer
Money: coins

Sample game play:

Let us go back to a previous example:

You are in Sector 1, the first star base of the Federation. You look around and look at all the stars and you admire the many shiny ships. Your wallet is empty. Your backpack has a strange tool in it. You are at 86% health. In front of you there is a small door that says “enter” and behind you the endless void of space.

Press [1] to go into the small door
Press [2] to fall into the endless void

If you mapped this, it would look like

ENDLESS VOID

You can either go through the small door, or walk into the endless void, falling forever, you die, and game over. In total, you need five of these “rooms” in the game. We also need to interact with items, money, and people, so let us go through the small door.

You enter the small door.

You are inside a small room. There is a door behind you, and two trap doors in the floor. There is 100 coins on the floor. There is an old toaster on the floor. There is a cookie on the floor. Your wallet is empty. Your backpack has a strange tool in it. You are at 86% health.

Press [1] to go into trap door 1
Press [2] to go into trap door 2
Press [3] to pick up the coins
Press [4] to pick up the toaster
Press [5] to eat the cookie

[user presses 5] You eat the cookie and feel amazing (+14 health)

You are inside a small room. There is a door behind you, and two trap doors in the floor. There is 100 coins on the floor. There is an old toaster on the floor. Your wallet is empty. Your backpack has a strange tool in it. You are at 100% health.

Press [1] to go into trap door 1
Press [2] to go into trap door 2
Press [3] to pick up the coins
Press [4] to pick up the toaster

[user presses 3] You pick up the coins and put them into your wallet (+100 = money)

You are inside a small room. There is a door behind you, and two trap doors in the floor. There is an old toaster on the floor. Your wallet has 100 coins. Your backpack has a strange tool in it. You are at 100% health.

Press [1] to go into trap door 1
Press [2] to go into trap door 2
Press [4] to pick up the toaster

[user presses 4] You pick up the toaster and are suddenly hit by lightning. You realize picking up toasters in space is a bad idea. Game over.

Let us look at a sample interaction:

You are in a field. You can go east or west. There is a magical talking turtle. Your wallet has 0 coins. Your backpack is empty.

[1] Go East
[2] Go West
[3] Talk to magical turtle

Hi, I am a magic talking turtle. I really like guessing games. If you can think of the number I am thinking of between 1-10, you will get a prize. What is your guess?
