Task Description

This section provides you with a brief description of the assessment task (the ‘what’).

For this assessment, you will work independently to design a clinical poster in pdf format using powerpoint or similar software as a method of disseminating information in a clinical setting. You will apply what you have learned in Modules 1,2 and 3 and identify psychophysiological factors impacting childbearing and health outcomes for the newborn. Upon the successful completion of this assessment you will have demonstrated the foundational knowledge necessary to support parents in having a well newborn. Remember that the purpose of a clinical poster is to support women. Therefore, avoid scary images / statistics that instil fear. Focus on what women can do to improve outcomes.

Task Instructions

This section provides you with step-by-step task instructions (the ‘how’).

You are required to create a poster that will provide information to women and their families about what influences or impacts the conception, growth and development of the fetus as well as 2 Assessment Brief information on how to ensure the birth of a healthy baby. The following points are suggestions on important points to include:

• reducing smoking,
• environmental factors,
• psychological or mental health factors,
• life style choices,
• diet and exercise guidelines,
• or anything that a woman and her family might need to know around healthy transition to parenthood for both the woman and her baby.

To plan your task, the following steps are recommended:

• Remember that the purpose of a clinical poster is to support women. Therefore, avoid scary images / statistics that instil fear. Focus on what women can do to improve outcomes. For example, instead of saying: “smoking increases the risk of premature birth” it would be more encouraging to say: “cessation of smoking at any point during the pregnancy will have beneficial effects and may reduce the risk of……”.
• Think about the key message that your poster will convey. It may be something like: “My poster will use graphics, images and text to make a visual impact that best communicates to women and their families the factors that can be implemented to reduce the risk of adverse health outcomes for the newborn”.
• Once you have defined your message, write out in text how you may best convey this message without using jargon and technical language.
• Remember that the layout of the poster is A3 (portrait or landscape). Format the size before inserting content in your poster. Adjusting the size after content has been inserted may change the layout.
• Create a poster plan, subdivide into sections.
• Now you are ready to create your first draft, identify graphics and images you want to use.
• Edit ruthlessly! You only have limited space and words available. Ensure that every word / image has an impact. By the end of Week 2 you may want to check in with a fellow student to peer review each other’s first draft.
• In Week 3 add information about diet and exercise (Module 3) to your poster into the relevant sections that you have prepared in the layout.
• Create the poster in powerpoint, slide one contains the poster and slide two contains the references. Save the two slides as a PDF.
