Building on this foundation, the assignment invites you to apply your critical thinking, problem solving, and analytical skills to visualize data and create an interactive dashboard. This practical exercise aims to transform complex datasets into engaging, intuitive visual stories that highlight the current landscape of quality education and gender equality across various countries and regions. Through the lens of data-driven insights, you will explore the interconnections between several potential factors, uncovering the multifaceted dimensions of progress towards these crucial goals.
As you progress, in Assignment 2 and Assignment 3, you will move beyond visualization and conduct descriptive and predictive analytics to identify patterns, predict trends, and provide evidence-based recommendations for policy and intervention strategies.
In Assignment 1, you are tasked with preparing an interactive dashboard. This dashboard should be designed to offer an in-depth and interactive visualization of key indicators related to SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 5 (Gender Equality). Your dashboard should enable users to explore and understand the complexities and interconnections between variables including but not limited to government expenditure on education, internet access levels, gender parity in education and political representation, youth unemployment rates, the percentage of individuals using the internet, households with internet access, mobile broadband subscriptions, educational attainment rates, GDP per capita, and more.
Additionally, your dashboard should highlight disparities in education and gender equality across different regions and income groups, showcasing the progress towards or challenges facing these SDGs.
The goal of this assignment is not only to test your analytical and technical skills in creating interactive visualizations but also to deepen your understanding of how data-driven insights can illuminate the path towards achieving quality education and gender equality worldwide. This project offers an opportunity to creatively present data in a way that tells a compelling story, encourages exploration, and prompts discussion on these critical global issues.
When creating the interactive dashboard, there are several critical factors to consider. Initially, it is important to integrate slicers for each categorical variable, such as region or income group, linking them to relevant numerical data. This integration allows for in-depth analysis across various categories. The dashboard, to be developed in the designated "Dashboard" worksheet within the Excel file, should feature between four (4) and six (6) interactive elements, including charts and tables.
These components must be organized in a clear and functional layout to facilitate user engagement and data exploration. In designing your dashboard, selecting appropriate visualizations and colour schemes is crucial to enhance readability and user experience. The dashboard's interactivity should allow users to slice and dice the data from multiple perspectives.
Data description
The provided Excel file includes multiple sheets, labelled “Data Description”, “SDG Data” and a worksheet for your dashboard. The “Data Description” sheet describes all the variables used in the “SDG Data” and is copied below for your convenience. You also need to calculate the total population from urban and rural figures and creating a new HDI group variable,
The dataset you will be working with in this assignment is compiled from publicly available sources, offering authentic data and insights directly relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is specifically curated by Reza Kachouie at Deakin Business School to be used for educational purposes in MIS171: Business Analytics unit. This dataset provides a rich basis for analysis, primarily focusing on data from 2022. Where data for 2022 was not accessible, I have included the most recent data available, with the understanding that some figures might be lagged, originating from 2020. For a deeper understanding of this data, a ZIP file containing all dataset sources is available for your review. It's important to note that due to instances of missing data, certain countries have been omitted from the dataset to ensure the reliability of your analysis.
