Case Study:

A small business, XYZ Enterprises, wants to design a network infrastructure that can efficiently handle their day-to-day operations, while also ensuring the security of their data. The business has two offices in the same city, and each office has approximately 20 employees. The offices are located 10 km apart, and the company wants to connect them through a secure network. The business relies on various network applications, including email, file sharing, and video conferencing. Your goal is to assess the current network infrastructure, identify performance and security issues, and recommend strategies to improve network performance and security.

Task 1: Your task is to design a network topology for XYZ Enterprises and sketch a basic logical network diagram (using professional tools such as Cisco packet tracer) of the office with five departments. You are free to assume the following:

  • Name of the Office and Departments
  • Networking Hardware such as routers, switches, hubs, modems, wireless access points, firewalls etc.

Task 2: The Company is utilizing a layer-by-layer approach to implement security. Using your expert knowledge of the TCP/IP Model and its layers, sketch the TCP/IP protocols and identify at least one protocol used by each layer.

Task 3: At each level of the TCP/IP model, there are security vulnerabilities and, therefore, security prevention measures that can be taken to ensure that enterprise applications are protected. Your task is to analyze the potential threats and vulnerabilities that the network may face on each layer and discuss the measures you can take to mitigate them.
