Assessment overview (MKT30016)
The objective of this assessment is to determine students’ knowledge and understanding of strategic marketing theories and frameworks by undertaking a case analysis relating to the global competitor environment and global customer based for an organisation. Proposed strategies and research-based responses to address the issue/s of the business case should be presented making an interactive presentation through an online forum in Canvas where the presenters should be able to justify their responses.Use a presentation format of your choice (e.g., Prezi, narrated power point, YouTube clip or other).
What you should do at the presentation:
(1) Briefly describe what the case is about. Present the main issues/discussion points the case raises.
(2) What Industry does the firm operate in? Develop three industry definitions from very broad to very narrow. Develop tree diagrams as appropriate.
(3) Using external research identify and justify three macro forces/trends currently impacting on this industry.
(4) Incorporating theoretical insights (see suggested lecture notes), make three recommendations pertaining to the firm’s marketing operations.
(5) Ask two interactive questions regarding the case study from the audience through the presentation forum (see e-tutorial group’s discussion section, Canvas). The presentation needs to be interactive and not one-way communication! So, think about how to creatively engage or include your peers in the presentation
Case Study
The following is derived from the work of Lewis et al (1991) in Cases in Australian Strategic Management, Sydney: Prentice Hall. It sets out a sequential method for analysing case study material.
1. Read the case right through to gain an overview. What is the case about? What are the main issues it raises?
2. Read the case again more carefully, highlighting key words, phrases and sentences.
3. Make a note of the case details which you think are most relevant to the topic being discussed. It is particularly useful during this step to identify where there are gaps in your knowledge of the situation. You must be careful not to make assumptions where there are knowledge gaps, although it is sometimes possible to make inferences by drawing together different pieces of information from the case.
4. Link the details of the case to the theories and concepts you have learned in the lectures, seminars, texts and through your own reading.
5. Consider the extent to which the theory(ies) is/are appropriate in understanding the situation in the case. Does this application suggest weaknesses or problems with the theory?
6. Consider the issues in a small group. This allows you the opportunity to test your analysis in a supportive environment and allows you to hear other people’s views and assess their points of view.
