Voluntary Assisted Dying is a contentious and polarising global issue. In Australia, historically there have been several attempts to reform the law in this area with recent significant develops. In 2019 Victoria became the first state in Australia to pass voluntary assisted dying laws, with Western Australia following shortly after.
 
The former Victorian Minister for Health Jill Hennessy has been a strong advocate for Voluntary Assisted Dying legislation in Victoria. She stated:
 
“Everyone deserves access to the very best end-of-life care. Sadly, the reality is for some people at the end of life, even the very best palliative care will not relieve their unbearable suffering.”

Critically discuss:
 
i) whether other states and territories should follow Victoria and Western Australia and adopt their own form of voluntary assisted dying legislation;
ii) or alternatively, is it preferential to have a national approach to this legislation.
