Explanation of how to do your weekly reflections 

▪ Reflective writing is a useful skill to learn for both your professional and personal life,

▪ Reflective writing is not hard once you understand how to do it.

▪ Every week in MM105, you will learn new concepts, and be exposed to new thoughts and ideas. This will be through engaging in topic notes, readings, lectures, tutorials, and forum interaction.

▪ Some of these new concepts, thoughts or ideas may resonate with you, some might not. The reflective learning journal gives you the space, and opportunity to write about something you find useful (or not).

▪ Each week you need to identify a concept. The way you find a concept can be to ask questions to yourself such as:

  • What do I know now that I did not know before?
  • What surprised me?
  • What intrigued me?

▪ You then write a reflective piece including the following:

  • What is this new concept about?
  • Where did I learn about this concept? (reference using APA 7 style)
  • Does this concept make sense to me?
  • How can I integrate this concept into my professional (or personal) life?

Using the following structure each week will help with your reflections, and when it comes to submitting your Assignment 3, most of your work will be done:

1. Choose a concept that you wish to expand upon.

Explain this concept briefly: what is the concept?

2. Identify where this concept came from.

Paraphrase a definition or explanation of the concept using the topic notes or reading, and make sure you reference (cite) 

3. Explain how this concept aligns with your professional (or personal) life.

How does the concept work in the real world? How are you going to try using this concept at work (or in your personal life?) Or is this concept something that you would NEVER use? If so, why not?

4. Give an example of this concept at play in your professional (or personal life)

Examples are a concrete way of demonstrating a concept in action, so use them. Be specific, not vague and general. You could explain what you are currently doing, and what you are going to change as a result of this new learning/concept. What, exactly, are you going to do from now on? Note that you will have explained why this is important in parts 1, 2, and 3.
