This assignment requires you to draw on the first assignment and complete an in-depth analysis of your target organization's external environment. The external environment includes both transactional stakeholders (customers, suppliers, employees etc.) and also other external stakeholders who may impact the operations, profitability and strategic options of the target organization. You will need to discuss current strategic priorities and suggest strategic options/objectives for the organization going forward with a lens of sustainability. There are three frameworks to inform an in-depth analysis: the macro-environment model (Chapter 3); Porter’s Five Forces model (Chapter 3), and Porter’s original generic strategies (Chapter 6). Figure 3.1 on p. 65 of Chapter 3 is a useful visualization of holistic approach that you need to undertake for the analysis. Chapter 6 discusses how sustainability can be incorporated into organizational strategies. The Hambrick and Fredrickson’s (2005) article and their ARENA model is also worth looking at for this assignment – the article is easy to read, well-structured, and logical – it also provides two examples (IKEA and BPI).
