For this assessment you are required to conduct a capability (internal) analysis of your target organisation in the broader context of sustainability.
A capability or internal analysis examines the resources and capability available to an organisation and an assessment of the relative value of these resources and capabilities. The Trafalgar paper (Pringle and Kroll, 1997) looks at an interesting historical example of how the physical, human and organizational resources of the British fleet assisted them in overcoming a numerically larger armada assembled against them. The authors note that even though the combined Spanish and French had superior physical resources, these were overcome by the superiority of the British human and organizational resources. The authors assess organisational resources using a variant of the VRIO (valuable, rare, inimitable, and well-organised) model, specifying those resources that led to the British fleet’s competitive advantage. This situation is often evident – smaller and more agile organisations succeed where larger, more poorly led, organisations fail. The Trafalgar example provides an example of a creative adaptation of strategic planning models to a not-for-profit example and the broader context of sustainability. Obviously Horatio Nelson’s objective at Trafalgar was not to make a profit, but rather to win a battle. In addition, Mitchell’s (2010) ‘Primer’ also provides an excellent overview of relevant models that you could use to structure the first assessment item. The Chapter 4 of the textbook is an extremely useful resource for this assignment. I recommend that you adopt the following structure for your report – however, this is just a suggestion and feel free to adopt any other (better) alternatives.

Stakeholders determine value by whether or not resources are beneficial to the company.-Rarity : Is your resource rare? If yes, it is your biggest strength. Competition will have a tough time over powering you. -Imitability : A rare and difficult to acquire resource ensures difficulty to imitate. This gives you a competitive advantage. - Organization: It requires determining the value, rarity and imitability first. If the resource has passed all three of these requirements, the company has to be organized. Otherwise, the benefits may slip away.
